Set in early 20th century, the film is about the lives of two theatre artistes played by Siddharth and Prithviraj and the competition that exists between them in a small drama troupe. The former is the main lead whereas the latter one is the antagonist in the film. Nassar plays the role of a guru to these actors and the role of actress Vedhicka is inspired by the stage artist and singer K. B. Sundarambal. The original songs and film score were composed by A. R. Rahman. The film was dubbed into Malayalam as Pradhi Nayagan.
Synopsis
Un hommage au cinéma tamoul des années 30/40 et, aux troupes de théâtre tamoul en voie de disparition. De 1920 à 1940, un voyage dans la vie d’artistes de théâtre tamoul, à travers leur amitié, leur amour et leurs rivalités. Sans être un biopic, Vasanthabalan reconnait s'être inspiré de quelques artistes de l’époque tels que K.B. Sundarambal, ou encore de S.G. Kittappa, doyens des théâtres musicaux de Madurai, capitale culturelle de l'Etat du Tamil Nadu, en Inde.Acteurs

The film set in the 18th century is all about a group of people who steals from the wealthy to provide food and shelter for their tribe. Kombodhi (Pasupathy) is the gang leader and during one of his missions he meets the brave Varipuli (Aadhi). He brings Varipuli to his village and a bond develops between the two. But Varipuli has a past and his real name is Chinna. For the death of a youth Thogaimayan (Bharath) from neighbouring village, the King had in fact ordered one youth to be given as offering to the Almighty and Chinna was the choice. Sequence of events lead to Chinna escaping from the offering only to find out the mystery behind Thogaimayan's death. But that was too late as too many things happened in his village by then. Now he goes on the hiding. Cut to present, Chinna is taken to be offered to God. Where the flashback begins.

Sue McKinley (Alice Patten), une jeune londonienne, rêve depuis longtemps de réaliser un film d’après les mémoires de son grand-père, membre de la force de police britannique en Inde au début de la révolte indienne pour l’indépendance. Sue se rend à Delhi et, avec l’aide de sa correspondante indienne Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), tente de trouver les acteurs qui joueront le rôle des premiers révolutionnaires indiens. Le casting s’annonce désastreux et Sue finit par engager la bande de copains de Sonia : Karan (Siddarth), Sukhi (Sharman Joshi), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni) et DJ (Aamir Khan), le meneur de la bande. Cependant ceux-ci ont du mal à comprendre les motivations de leur personnage, eux qui ne croient pas en l’avenir de ce pays corrompu à tous les échelons politiques. Dans ce pays où rien n’a réellement changé depuis l’Indépendance de l’Inde, comment peuvent-ils croire en l’engagement de ces premiers révolutionnaires ? Cependant l’interprétation de leur personnage dans le film de Sue, ainsi que l’événement dramatique survenu à leur ami Ajay (Madhavan), vont les amener à changer totalement et tous vont s’engager dans un combat très dangereux. Pour leur ami et pour changer leur pays et la sociétè de la corruption et de l'injustice ils ont sacrifié leur vie.

An elderly English woman Amy Wilkinson (Carole Trangmar-Palmer), almost at her deathbed in London, wants to come down to Madras in search of a young man Ilam Parithi (Arya) whom she last saw on 15 August 1947 to return a thali (traditional wedding threads) of his mother, which he gave her as a sign of stating that she belongs to India and nobody can separate them.
