Behrman's 1927 play The Second Man. It starred Lowell Sherman and Alice Joyce, in her second to last film role. The film just broke even.
Synopsis
Geoffrey Clarke is a poor poet, who has his eyes on the fortune of a rich widow, Alice Frayne, in order to keep him in the lifestyle he feels he deserves. Geoffrey is pursued, however, by the young and lovely, yet poor, Monica Grey. Monica, in turn, is pursued by the chemist, Austin Lowe.Acteurs

Princess Anne (Mary Astor) plans to run away with Freddie Granton (Anthony Bushell), the commoner secretary of her father, King Eric VIII (Lowell Sherman), once her domineering mother, Queen Martha (Nance O'Neil), has left for a vacation in America. An American newspaper reporter named Charlie Carroll (Charles King) is sent to Venice to interview a Romanian general, who is played by Noah Beery. While in Venice Charlie falls for a young heiress named Nanette Dodge (Irene Delroy). When Charlie is unable to get an interview with the Romanian general, a local siren named Kunegundi (Vivien Oakland), who is the general's favorite helps him. Meanwhile, Nanette learns that her sister is being blackmailed by Prince Kasloff of Russia (Lowell Sherman), to whom she wrote some incriminating letters. Nanette attempts to vamp the Prince in order to obtain the love letters. The Prince, however, tricks her and demands that Nanette marry him if she wants to save her sister. After being repeatedly rebuked by Nanette, the prince hires the Romanian general (Noah Beery) to kidnap her and force her into marriage. Charlie, thinking she has eloped, consoles himself with Kunegundi (Vivien Oakland) and almost marries her until he realizes the truth about Nanette and that she has been kidnapped by the Prince. Charlie sets out to rescue her and when the Prince shows up disguised as the general he shoots Prince Kasloff. Charlie and Nanette are happily reunited.

Richard Carewe has raised Richard Dane since childhood. Dane was the son of Carewe's close friend and Carewe promised to care for his son before the friend died. Carewe plans for Dane to marry Phyllis Ericson, the daughter of his housekeeper. Phyllis, however, has no interest in Dane and is in love with Carewe. The film begins on the day of Dane's twenty-first birthday. Carewe is planning a surprise birthday party. Dane never shows up as he has gone to a nightclub to see his new girlfriend, Kara, a notorious gold-digger who sings and dances at the nightclub under the name of The Firefly. Dane returns home in the early hours of the morning drunk and carelessly drops a note from Kara on his way to his room. Early the next day, the housekeeper finds the Dane had dropped and shows it to her daughter, Phyllis, who shows the note to Carewe. As the note is addresses to Richard, which happens to be the forename of both Carewe and Dane, Carewe acts quickly and pretends that the note is his. Phyllis is upset as she is in love with Carewe. When confronted with the note by Carewe, Dane gets upset and plans to elope with Kara. Dane leaves the house and proposes marriage to Kara, who accepts because she thinks he is rich. After the marriage, when Kara discovers he is poor she tells him that she never wants to see him again. Carewe, not knowing that Kara has already married Dane, offers her five thousand dollars to pretend to be his own lover in public. She accepts the money and when Phyllis arrives at the nightclub she almost cries when she witnesses Kara's attentions to Carewe. She leaves leaves the nightclub. Later on, Dane arrives and is heartbroken to find Kara has sold herself a day after their wedding. Dane goes home and confesses everything to Phyllis. She realizing the truth, confesses her love for Carewe when he returns. They embrace as Carewe confesses his love for her also.

Florence Fallon, fille de pasteur, vient de perdre son père. À l’église lors de l’enterrement, elle monte en chaire et fustige l’assistance pour avoir remplacé son père en tant que pasteur à cause de son grand âge. Un escroc, Hornsby, présent lors de la scène la convainc d’exploiter ses dons oratoires pour prêcher l’évangile dans une maison de culte. Florence confie au soin d’Hornsby la partie financière de l’entreprise et chaque soir la prédicatrice attire les fidèles de plus en plus nombreux dans un temple. La maison de culte se transforme en véritable show, Florence délivre même son message dans une cage entourée de fauves et exécute de prétendus miracles devant une foule extasiée. L’affaire est des plus lucrative surtout pour Hornsby. Par la suite, elle rencontre un jeune aveugle John Carson, sauvé du suicide en entendant Florence à la radio. Ils tombent amoureux et décident de fuir à Monte-Carlo. Hornsby, sauve les apparences en expliquant que la prédicatrice est partie en pèlerinage. De retour, Florence est décidée à arrêter le « spectacle » en révélant que tout est fait uniquement pour rapporter de l’argent. Hornsby, bien décidé à empêcher Florence de révéler la supercherie, provoque un court-circuit le soir des révélations voulant plonger la salle dans le noir mais un feu se déclare et Hornsby meurt dans les flammes. Florence et John partiront ensemble.

As described in a film magazine, Howard Jeffries, Sr. (Randolf) marries again, and the film reveals that the new Mrs. Howard Jeffries, Sr. (Hopper) and Robert Underwood (Evans), the rather fast college roommate of Howard Jeffries, Jr. (James), had been more than just friends. Howard Jr. marries Annie Sands (Joyce), who had been a lovely waitress in the college town. When the father hears who the bride is, there is a flare up and the young couple leave the house. Underwood opens a curio store, but loses money that does not belong to him. He writes to Mrs. Jeffries, Sr. and says that if she does not come to him, he will shoot himself. Howard Jr. remembers that Underwood owes him some money and goes to collect it, but there gets drunk and passes out on the sofa. Underwood hides him, and Mrs. Jeffries, Sr. arrives and tells Underwood that she will have nothing to do with him. After she leaves, Underwood shoots and kills himself. This sound awakes Howard Jr., who is captured by the police and, under the hypnotic strain of the third degree, confesses to murder. When it is learned that a young woman had called on Underwood, the police try to pin the crime on Annie. She suspects that it was the other Mrs. Jeffries, and gets her to provide evidence to show that it was a suicide, but, to protect her fellow relative, Annie allows the police to believe that she had made the visit. After the trial, Howard, Sr. still wants to end his son's marriage on the sly, but a lawyer who is a family friend convinces Mrs. Jeffries, Sr. to confess to her husband, and the family conflicts are resolved.

Lennox un homme très riche et fort d'un succès certain chez les jeunes filles de la bonne société, séduit Anna d'extraction plus modeste. Cette dernière, envoyée par sa mère demander une aide financière auprès de parents éloignés se laisse convaincre par les assauts répétés de Lennox et une demande en mariage de celui-ci. Une cérémonie fantoche orchestrée par Lennox est célébrée, et le mariage consommé. Mais, Anna tombant rapidement enceinte, Lennox la laisse tomber. Seule, elle accouche de son enfant, Trust Lennox, qui disparaît rapidement d'une maladie. À la mort de l'enfant, Anna erre et trouve finalement un travail comme femme à tout faire chez Squire Bartlett, un propriétaire terrien. David, le fils de Squire Bartlett, s'éprend d'elle. Mais, bien que personne n'en ait alors eu vent, elle ne peut souscrire à ses avances, à cause de son passé. D'autant plus que Squire Bartlett a d'autres ambitions pour son fils que de le marier à une simple employée de maison. C'est alors que réapparaît Lennox, courtisant Kate. À la vue d'Anna, il cherche à la faire partir. Anna refuse, sans le trahir pourtant. Mais Squire Bartlett apprend le passé d'Anna par Martha, la commère de la ville. Sommée de partir de chez son employeur, elle désigne Lennox comme la cause de ses malheurs. Elle est cependant déjà partie lorsque Squire Bartlett se rend compte de qui est réellement l'homme qui se trouve à sa table. Lennox est alors mis hors d'état de nuire par David qui part dans la tempête à la recherche d'Anna. Retrouvée évanouie sur la glace, au milieu d'une rivière, elle est sauvée et trouve sa place, aux côtés de David, au sein de la famille Bartlett.
