Conspiracy is a 1930 mystery melodrama produced and distributed by RKO Pictures and directed by Christy Cabanne. It is the second adaptation of the play The Conspiracy by Robert B. Baker and John Emerson and stars Bessie Love, Ned Sparks, and Hugh Trevor.

Synopsis

After their father is killed, brother and sister Margaret and Victor Holt devote themselves to bringing down the drug gang responsible for his death. Victor rises to become an attorney in the district attorney's office, and eventually Margaret wangles her way into becoming the secretary for James (Marco) Morton, the head of the drug ring. When Morton discovers Margaret's true identity, he contrives a plot to lure her brother into a trap and kill him.

Le film comporte deux parties. À l'origine, il était présenté avec entracte. D'emblée, l'intention est annoncée : ce film a pour unique fin de décrire les horreurs de la guerre, dans l'espoir que les hommes s'épargneront à l'avenir pareille épreuve. La première partie décrit l'Amérique avant la guerre civile, à travers le destin de deux familles : les nordistes Stoneman, avec le député abolitionniste Austin Stoneman (basé sur la vie authentique de Thaddeus Stevens), ses deux fils et sa fille, Elsie, et les sudistes Cameron, une famille qui compte deux filles (Margaret et Flora) et trois fils, notamment Ben.

"Happy" Farrell (Moore) wants to be a famous song and dance man. He befriends a young dancer, Leola (Love), who accompanies him to an audition. Leola is given a contract, but Happy is not. Wealthy businessman William "Will" Van Luyn (Conrad Nagel) proposes to his secretary, Joan Thayer (Leila Hyams). She accepts, but worries how her family will react. Alan Camp has written a book on eugenics, and is looking to prove his theories.
