Anjuman (English: Congregation) is a 1986 Hindi drama film directed by Muzaffar Ali, starring Shabana Azmi, Farooq Shaikh and Rohini Hattangadi in lead roles. The film set in Lucknow, deals with exploitation of women and problems of local " chikan" embroidery workers.
The film has music by Khayyam, with lyrics by noted Urdu poet Shahryar, with three song sung by lead actress Shabana Azmi, who reluctantly agreed to do playback singing. Noted actor Farooq Shaikh worked in three films with Muzaffar Ali through his career, with other two being Gaman (1978), and Umrao Jaan (1981).

In order to improve their lifestyle, village near Badaun, based Ghulam Hasan (Farooq Shaikh) decides to re-locate to Bombay, on the insistence of his close friend Lalulal Tiwari (Jalal Agha). He leaves behind his ailing mother and wife (Smita Patil). Lalulal helps him get a job cleaning taxis. Ghulam subsequently learns how to drive, and is hired to drive a taxi. In spite of his best efforts, he is unable to save enough money to visit Lucknow.

In a village of Awadh, sugarcane planters are exploited by mill owner (Bharat Bhushan). A young man (Suresh Oberoi) returns to this village after receiving a degree in law from a reputed university of Lucknow. Seeing the poor condition of planters he urges them to stop selling their sugarcane to the mill owner and instead start their own co-operative mill. The mill owner, his landlord-agent (Saeed Jaffrey) and son discourage the villagers from doing so. The mill owner's son urges the people to form a planter's union and continue selling their crop to the mill. Initially the villagers trust him but after continuous persuasions from the young man and realising that only self-sufficiency can improve their condition, they unite and set up their own mill. In the end the young man marries a village girl (Deepa) who was very active in the movement.

"Bhavna" the movie is a story of a less privileged woman. A young lady, an orphan named Bhavna Saxena who lives all alone in the city meets a man named Ajay Kapoor in a garden, sketching her portrait. Ajay leaves Bhavna alone and many days pass . The days turn into weeks and weeks into months . Still there is no news of Ajay . Ajay never came back to Bhavna. Bhavna manages to procure Ajay's father's address and goes in search of Ajay . Bhavna is astonished to see that Ajay has married another woman as per his father's wishes. Dejected Bhanva confides her sorrows to Shobha, her best friend . But this was not the end of her struggles in life.

Pooja (Shabana Azmi), who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), have to leave the apartment they rent. The twist that occurred when Inder gives her the keys of a new house proves to be double-edged, when it is revealed that he is in love with another woman, Kavita (Smita Patil), with whom he earned the money (in the film industry) for the new apartment. While previously giving advice to her maid (Rohini Hattangadi) cheated by her husband, now Pooja becomes herself involved in a similar situation. When Inder deserts Pooja for Kavita, she chooses to leave the apartment for a women's hostel with only 7px2000 that she had when she got married. She is helped by Raj (Raj Kiran) to surpass the difficulties of life as a single person, to find a job and to rely morally on herself. Raj and Pooja become good friends. Gradually, Kavita's mental instability deepens her fears of insecurity, even after Inder requests Pooja to sign the divorce papers.
