Ciao! Manhattan est un film américain sorti en 1972 réalisé par John Palmer et David Weisman.

Synopsis

Le film raconte le destin tragique d'Edie Sedgwick, star déchue de la Factory d'Andy Warhol. De retour chez sa mère en Californie, Susan/Edie s'installe dans la piscine aménagée et décorée de couvertures de journaux où elle apparaît et de photos de mode où elle ressasse ses années de gloire à New York dans le monde du pop art et de la folie régnant à la Factory à la fin des années 1960. Susan/Edie partage ses visions dues à la drogue et à l'alcool avec un jeune hippie paumé, Butch qui a pris Susan en stop lors de son pèlerinage en Californie.

The concept of Poor Little Rich Girl is a day in the life of socialite Edie Sedgwick. Warhol and Gerard Malanga began shooting in March 1965 in Sedgwick's posh New York City apartment. After initial filming and processing, the reels were found to be out of focus due to a faulty camera lens. Warhol then reshot footage, adding it to the original, out-of-focus first reel footage. The first reel depicts an out-of-focus Sedgwick waking up, ordering coffee and orange juice, smoking cigarettes and marijuana, exercising, taking pills and putting on makeup in silence. The only noise is that of an Everly Brothers record playing continuously in the background.

The film begins with a totally white screen and as the sun sets, the image of the Empire State Building emerges. The floodlights on its exterior come on, the building's lights flicker on and off for the next 6½ hours, then the floodlights go off again in the next to the last reel so that the remainder of the film takes place in nearly total darkness. The movie was filmed with Andy Warhol directing and filmmaker Jonas Mekas working as cinematographer. During three of the reel changes, filming recommenced before the lights in the filming room were switched off, making the faces of Warhol and Mekas momentarily visible in the reflection of the window each time.

John Prentice est un district Attorney de grande renommée. Il est marié à Evelyn et est père d'une petite fille. John délaisse toutefois sa femme, vivant une relation adultère avec une de ses clientes Nancy Harrisson. Evelyn, se sentant seule, fait la connaissance par l'intermédiaire d'une amie d'un poète nommé Lawrence Kennard qui lui offre un de ses ouvrages. Charmée par l'homme qui lui fait des avances, Evelyn Prentice échange une série de lettres avec lui et commence une liaison avec lui, ignorant qu'il est un escroc. Au plus fort de sa liaison adultère avec le faux poète qui veut aller plus loin avec elle, Evelyn se sentant coupable décide de mettre un terme à leur relation. Lawrence Kennard va tenter de faire chanter Evelyn par le biais des lettres qu'il a conservées. Tentant de les récupérer, Evelyn tue son amant d'un coup de révolver. Une autre femme est accusée du meurtre. S'ensuit un procès qui sera mené par John, ignorant que le crime a été commis par sa propre femme.
