Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita M. is a 1991 Metro Manila Film Festival entry that tells the story of a singer-entertainer Pacita M. ( Nora Aunor) in a seedy Quezon City nightclub. Pacita, has chosen the "unworthy" occupation of becoming a singer and standup comedian, and this is another source of conflict between her and the girl's proud, aristocratic grandmother. Pacita, in earlier scenes is shown as one lacking in manners, is being tried for killing her daughter, Grace (Lotlot de Leon). She has attempted to disconnect the respirator that sustains the life of her comatose daughter. This highly acclaimed movie directed by Elwood Perez bravely tackles the sensitive issue of euthanasia.
Synopsis
Pacita M (Nora Aunor) is an aging bar singer in a seedy Quezon City Night Club who reaches the lowest point in her life and realizes that she has accomplished nothing noteworthy. Noli (Nora Aunor), is an intelligent girl but a poor farmer's daughter. She dreams of going to college to become a doctor. To realize her dreams, her father, Damian, mortgages his farm to a rich land owner, Dona Martina (Gloria Romero). But the old woman and his son, Anselmo (Tirso Cruz III), look down on Noli's family and sneer at her ambitions. Perseverance pays off and Noli is able to finish college and claims back their property from Dona Martina. Noli and Anselmo fall in love with each other. But Dona Martina resents the relationship. Noli gets pregnant, does not tell Anselmo and instead marries Arturo despite the objections of his sister, Margarita. Then Arturo commits suicide when he finds out that the child is not his. Years pass and Noli's daughter, Maggie, grows up to be a beautiful but rebellious young lady with her a mother's looks but with exact opposite character. She falls in love with Jun, who turns out to be Anselmo's son. Things soon become complicated.

This is a story of day-to-day living by Renata Lolita Rodriguez, her daughter Esther Nora Aunor and Esther's husband Luis (Raul Aragon). Ester and Luis are a couple trying to start their own family while living in Renata's house. The couple can not bear a child due to Ester's sterility, which was ironic being that Ester is a family planning program worker. Ester's barrenness becomes a source of constant argument between the husband and wife, aggravated by Ester's unwillingness to allow Luis to seek employment out of the country. Renata often acts as a pacifier of her daughter during the couple's arguments. Unfortunately, Ester and her mother get into a heated argument resulting to Renata feeling emotional about it. She then confides to Luis about her problems, which results to one night of passionate union. The single night of union impregnates the aging Renata who refuses to have an abortion. Renata and Luis try to hide their fault until Ester discovers the truth accidentally when Renata gave birth to her child.

Rene is a gay man who came out of the closet at age 60. Ailing in his twilight years, he thinks it is now too late for love, even companionship, and that all there is to look forward to is Death. He has made a will, bequeathing his few possessions to his even fewer friends. Everything is packed and labeled, ready for distribution. He has even paid for a coffin, taking advantage of a funeral home's Summer Sale. Nowadays the only companion Rene has is Bwakaw, a stray dog that hangs around his house and follows him wherever he goes. As Rene waits for the day of his death, he gets the surprise of his life when it is Bwakaw who suddenly falls ill and is diagnosed with cancer. Rene is surprisingly affected, and he realizes that he values Bwakaw more than he thinks. In his struggle to get Bwakaw cured, Rene finds comfort in the most unlikely person: Sol, a tricycle driver who helps him bring Bwakaw to the vet and befriends him. Buoyed by Sol's friendship, Rene starts living. Little by little he discovers simple joys. To the surprise of his friends, he even has his hair dyed to look younger. One day, he finally decides to make a move on Sol. The revelation that Rene is gay and has feelings for him surprises and disgusts Sol. He rejects Rene and leaves in anger. In the meantime, Bwakaw's condition gets worse. Not even Rene's ancient Santo Entierro (a supposedly miraculous statue of Jesus Christ) can save Bwakaw. Bwakaw dies, and Rene's neighbors help him bury the faithful dog. But Bwakaw's death, even while it was still only imminent, has made a difference. Rene has found a new appreciation for life and what is most important. He decides to unpack the things that he has already willed to other people and make his house more habitable. He is, after all, still alive.
