The film produced by Rashi brothers, is based on the novel of the same name written by Devaki Murthy. The film majorly had women playing the lead roles comprising Aarathi, Leelavathi, M.N Lakshmi Devi, G. V. Sharadha and Advani Lakshmi Devi. Dr. Govinda Mannur, K. S. Ashwath and Seetharam played the male supporting roles. Actor Seetharam was colloquially named as "Upasane" Seetharam for the rest of his career after the release of this film.
The film dealt with the plight of Sharadha (Aarathi) who intends to pursue her career in classical music. The film went on to win multiple high profile awards at the Karnataka State Film Awards for the year 1974-75 including the Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. Aarathi, who played the protagonist at her age of 19, won the Filmfare Best Actress award.

Arathi is affianced to a guy who is visiting the United States. Being thus a de facto daughter-in-law, she assumes the role and practically lives with her in-laws. However when her fiance returns, she finds out that he has married Alicia, a "white woman", and is no longer interested in her. The rest of the story mostly revolves around how Alicia wins over all and sundry with her agreeable character and willingness to meld and melt into Indian society. Arathi assumes a larger-than-life good samaritan character, which is presumably the very antithesis of a jilted lover.

The movie examines the tumults in the lives of the people residing in the Belli Moda estate. Indira is the heiress of her father's estate, named Belli Moda. A young man, Mohan, is engaged to her and is desirous of owning the Belli Moda, once Indira's father passes away. Mohan returns from the US, only to discover that his fiancee's mother has died in labor, leaving behind a son - the new inheritor of Belli Moda. This shatters Mohan's dreams of the estate and he bitterly refuses to marry Indira. One day, Mohan meets with a car accident and is severely injured. He is nursed by Indira, and presently, Mohan falls truly in love with her and proposes for marriage. However, this time, Indira refuses to marry him and breaks his heart, for he only cared about her money.

The film revolves around the issues of a woman's chastity, the acceptance of mentally ill by society and unfaithful spouses. The story starts with the chance meeting of the heroine Kaveri (Kalpana) and the hero Sathish (Gangadhar). Sathish falls in love with Kaveri who is educated, sophisticated, beautiful and hails from a respectable family. Eventually they get married with the blessings of their parents. They are a picture perfect couple. They build their dream house, they beget a son, buy a car and are generally prosperous. When Kaveri conceives for the second time, the doctor express concern over her weakness. During post partum period, she remembers the incident in her past wherein she is forced into incestuous pre-marital sex by her cousin and loses her mental balance. During this delirium she reveals this to her husband. She is then admitted to a mental hospital. After recovery, she is discharged from the hospital. The doctors inform Sathish of Kaveri's delicate state of mind and that she needs to be loved and cared for. However, Sathish still affected by the thought of his wife's pre-marital relationship ignores her. Kaveri discovered that she will have to face scorn from her family, neighbours and her husband. The final blow comes when Kaveri discovers that Sathish is having an extra-marital relationship with a female colleague, who used to pursue him before and who Sathish used to make fun of. Unable to bear it, she ultimately goes insane and is admitted to the same mental hospital. Kalpana's performance as a traumatic woman was widely acclaimed by critics.

But as fate has it doesn’t happen, and she goes in deep depression and commits suicide, too late for the young lover who realizes that he had fallen in love with his own mother.
