Shankar (Manoj Kumar) loses his first wife (Nanda) in an accident. She died while saving her son (Deepak). Due to the accident Deepak loses his voice. Shankar wants to hear Deepak but it is only possible by an operation. So, Shankar tries hard to collect money for the operation. After much struggle Shankar gets the money for the operation. The operation gets started, and becomes successful. After one day of the completion of the operation Shankar asks the doctor to meet Deepak, but the doctor suggests him to meet Deepak a day later. To pass the time Shankar goes to factory, where in the excitement to meet Deepak he loses his control and get injured due to which he loses his hearing power. The father, who only lives to hear his son, becomes deaf when his son gets voice.

Anoop studies law in Calcutta, while his widowed mom lives in a small town in West Bengal. He has a sister, Sudha, who is married to Anil and lives in Calcutta. Since Anoop is of marriageable age, his mom has selected a prospective bride for him in her neighbourhood. The girl's name is Vidya. When Anoop returns home, his mother asks him for his approval, but he says he wants to see the girl first. He goes to see Vidya, and also gets to meet another village belle by the name of Minoo, the daughter of Sharda and Ramchandra. He returns home, tells his mom that he cannot marry Vidya, and will marry only Minoo. His mother reluctantly agrees and the marriage takes place. It is then that they find out that Minoo has no household skills. Neither is she educated, nor mature enough to understand her relationship with Anoop. Her only interests appear to be stealing mangoes and other fruit, and playing with children much younger than her. Anoop's mom is quite exasperated with Minoo and is compelled to keep the new bride under lock and key. When the time comes for Anoop to return to Calcutta, he asks Minoo to come with him, but she refuses.

Calcutta. Subrata Mazumdar, modeste employé de banque à Calcutta, peine à subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, dont ses parents âgés qui partagent sa maison. Allant contre les règles établies, et afin d'améliorer le quotidien de toute la famille, sa femme Arati part en ville chercher du travail, à la réprobation de son beau-père, professeur à la retraite. Elle est embauchée dans une société de matériels ménagers et fait du porte à porte pour vendre des machines à coudre. Par sa personnalité et ses résultats, elle attire l'attention de son directeur qui envisage de lui donner d'autres responsabilités. Mais Subatra accepte mal cette situation, et il conduit Arati à accepter de signer une lettre de démission. Cependant, la banque qui l'emploie fait faillite. In extremis, il arrive à prévenir Arati de ne pas remettre sa lettre. Quelques semaines plus tard, une collègue anglo-indienne d'Arati est renvoyée avec comme motif absence pour maladie. Devant ce qui lui parait être une injustice, Arati se fâche avec son patron et finit par lui remettre sa démission. Touché par la droiture de sa femme, Subrata et celle-ci envisagent l'avenir avec confiance.

Au Bengale au XIXe siècle. Bhubaneshwar Chaudhary est un zamindar (propriétaire terrien) riche et autoritaire. Désireux d'occuper la première place, tant aux yeux de ses voisins que du colon britannique, il veut faire réaliser une sculpture de la déesse Durga ayant les traits de la reine Victoria. Aucun bengali n'acceptant cette commande, il engage un sculpteur bihari, Brij Bhushan. D'autre part, il souhaite désespérément avoir un héritier et, rendant son épouse responsable de cet échec, il se marie avec une jeune femme, Jashomati, qu'il harcèle sexuellement sans plus de résultat. Cette dernière, traumatisée par les assauts répétés de son mari et par la compétition qui s'installe entre les deux épouses, s'attache de plus en plus à Brij Bhushan.
