George Blake (Formby) is a waiter with ambitions to join the Navy, although he's been rejected several times, because of a weak heart. But during an air raid he's mistaken for a sailor because he's wearing the clothes of a navy friend who's borrowed his to go to a Lock-in at a pub. George is spotted by military police who think he is AWOL and escort him back to Naval barracks. He impresses the sailors there with his songs and ukulele playing, and is recruited to play at the "Spick and Span" troop radio concert in London. Somehow, along the way, he stumbles on a group of Nazi spies using a taxidermists shop as a front, and foils their plot to blow up a British submarine, "The Firefly". He also impresses and wins the heart of Pat (Anne Firth}, the Wren he's fallen for.

This World War II movie brilliantly opens with Sally Maitland (Anna Neagle) appearing to signal Nazi planes to bomb England after murdering an innocent citizen in his home. The next morning Sally boards a ship bound from Britain for Canada crossing an Atlantic with German predators afoul. Two of the passengers, Jim Garrick (Richard Greene) and Polish officer Jan Orlock (Albert Lieven), seek her acquaintance despite her long-time, and well-known admiration for Nazi Germany. It soon becomes common knowledge that Jim is in British intelligence. Sally rebuffs his advances, but welcomes Jan's attention. Much later in the film to keep us guessing, we learn that Sally is in fact a deep cover British agent on a secret mission shadowing her quarry Jan. She chases Jan across the globe thwarting sabotage against the allies. Unbeknownst to Sally, Jim is assigned to help and protect her on the same mission.

Two quite incompetent female detectives, Ethel and Gracie, played by the past-time famous British radio comediennes Ethel Revnell and Gracie West, disguise themselves as Land Army girls. Le 3 septembre 1939 à Prague — juste avant la déclaration de guerre —, le professeur Axel Bomasch, inventeur d'un procédé de blindage, ne voulant pas que sa trouvaille tombe aux mains de l'Allemagne nazie, parvient à s'enfuir à Londres, mais laisse derrière lui sa fille Anna, arrêtée par la Gestapo et envoyée en camp de concentration. Là, elle rencontre Karl Marsen, prisonnier comme elle. Ils parviennent à s'évader et à gagner Londres à leur tour. Par l'intermédiaire d'un agent des services secrets britanniques, Gus Bennett, la jeune femme retrouve son père, mais Karl, en réalité un officier nazi, kidnappe les Bomasch qui sont transférés à Berlin. Gus se rend alors dans la capitale du Reich, sous l'identité d'un officier allemand du Génie — il est germanophone —, pour tenter de ravir Anna et le professeur à la Gestapo et de les ramener en Angleterre.
