Fils de l'acteur et metteur en scène Gösta Ekman Sr. (1890-1938), Hasse Ekman est également le père de l'acteur Gösta Ekman Jr. (1939-2017), de l'acteur Stefan Ekman (1944-), et du réalisateur Mikael Ekman (1943-) — ce dernier, lui-même père de l'actrice, productrice et danseuse Sanna Ekman (1965-) —.

Biographie
En 1924, âgé de neuf ans, Hasse Ekman débute au cinéma avec un petit rôle dans un film muet, puis jouera régulièrement à partir de 1933 et jusqu'en 1960 (à trois reprises, sous la direction d'Ingmar Bergman). Il est scénariste de 1938 à 1964 et producteur entre 1945 et 1950. Enfin, il est assistant-réalisateur de Gustaf Molander en 1939, avant de réaliser des films (dont il est également, la plupart du temps, scénariste et acteur) entre 1940 et 1964.
