Ellise (Maja Salvador), a tough-spirited college student, finds herself in the company of Jojo (Dennis Trillo) after settling their issues involving her grades. Jojo tries to woo Ellise, but she makes it clear to him that she is not looking for a boyfriend. Years later, Ellise learns something about Jojo and gets in touch with him. They meet and the spark between them ignites once more, but Ellise gets her heart broken when Jojo confesses to her that he’s already getting married to Racquel (Ellen Adarna). Jojo and Ellise decide to stay as friends, but deep inside they continue to build their feelings for each other. No one wants to bee "chosen" anymore, least of all Duwokan (Barbie Forteza), Pinailog'g 15 year old grand daughter. Duwokan wants to live her life, go out, learn new things and fall in love—all of which Pinailog disapproves owing her beliefs that Duwokan does not have the choice in the matter, just as she never had a choice when she was chosen. However, as Duwokan falls in love with a young man, the sanctity of the "tuos" ( the pact between the supernatural deities and their village0 is threatened, putting Duwokan's life in danger. Realizing that she cannot just let things be, Pinailog fights for Duwokan's right to live her own life and finds herself coming face to face, literally, with the ghosts of a tradition which shackled her into a life of solitary confinement.

1898, Province of Bulacan - President Emilio Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado) together with his Prime Minister Apolinario Mabini (Epi Quizon) and his cabinet are debating the issue of the American presence in the Philippines. Felipe Buencamino (Nonie Buencamino) and Pedro Paterno (Leo Martinez) support the American occupation, while General Antonio Luna (John Arcilla) and General José Alejandrino (Alvin Anson) wants independence for the Philippines. Luna asks the cabinet to authorize a pre-emptive strike while the Americans have yet to land their ground troops. Aguinaldo however assured his cabinet that the Americans had promised to help win freedom from their Spanish overlords. Unfortunately, the Americans have invaded key cities in Manila, indicating a possible war against the Filipinos.
