The story begins with Shah Jahan, known as Prince Khurram (Zulfikar Sayed) when he is about 19 years old. Khurram was Emperor Jahangir's (Arbaaz Ali) favourite son, whom Jahangir wanted to be the future Emperor of India, along with his wife Noor Jahan (Pooja Batra), who was well aware of this fact. Noor Jahan was married once previously, but when her first husband died, Jahangir married her. Ladli Begum (Kim Sharma) is Noor Jahan's daughter from her first marriage. Noor Jahan is a shrewd lady, who wants the best for herself and her daughter and she aspires for Ladli Begum to marry Prince Khurram so she that she will become the Empress of the Mughal Dynasty.

The film is a tragedy based on a tawaif (courtesan) 'Anjuman' played by Rani, who is a "tawaiif" who flirts with the emotions of a wealthy Santosh Kumar and later falls in love with his younger brother played by Waheed Murad. In order to save his older brother's marriage Waheed's character decides to frequent Anjuman's "kotha" in an "exchange" demanded by Anjuman, although being in love with another girl (played by Deeba). Sabiha plays the role of wife of the older brother's character in the film, and eventually implores Anjuman to forsake her own love so that Waheed's Character can live happily. At the end, Anjuman (Rani) has to face a fate worse than death, where she is invited to sing at the wedding of her Love. Lovelorn and disappointed Anjuman offers a woeful song, as she has swallowed poison, and dies at the feet of her love.
The story is about two different classes; Shaan belongs to a middle-class family with great traditional values and Reema is from a rich family. The film portrayed the difficulties of a rich girl adjusting to a middle-class family.

The film starts off by showing the relationship of Nadeem and Samina Peerzada, They soon end up having a baby boy Shaan. Shaan is friends with Reema, who belongs to a family much richer than his family. The first encounter was when Shaan (one or two years older than Reema) gave her dummy to a crying Reema, when he was only around four years of age. The families then split leaving the two friends separated.
The storyline is based around Shaan and Saima. Moosa played by Shaan grows up in a cave due to his father being killed. His father was an Imam who died in Moosa hands when a bunch of pandits/ came and attacked his Mosque. Saima comes along with her father who dies as well when some evil goons attack and she is taken hostage by Shamoon (Shafqat Cheema) for her exterior. What will Moosa do about this?
