The miniseries begins in medias res on September 8, 1972, as Team Canada takes the ice for Game 4 of the series in Vancouver. The team is shocked from the boos they receive from their home crowd and the cheers for the Soviet team. The film then cuts back five months earlier to April 1972 with Alan Eagleson meeting with Gabrielle Fournier, an official with External Affairs Canada, and the heads of the Soviet (headed by Alexander Gresko) and Canadian hockey programmes (headed by Joe Kryczka and Charles Hay) in Prague, Czechoslovakia. They iron out the deal for an eight game hockey series between the USSR and a team compiled of the best Canadian NHLers.

A Winter Tale tells the story of a Black men's support group that begins to meet at a Caribbean Takeaway restaurant in the aftermath of the shooting death of a local child. It was developed through a collaborative improvisational process with the cast, who were drawn from Toronto's Caribbean and multicultural communities. It was shot on location in Parkdale, Toronto.

The film explores the growth, sale and trafficking of cannabis. The history of cannabis and the reasons for its present prohibition are discussed, often comparing it to the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the 1920s, suggesting that gang drug warfare and other negative aspects associated with cannabis are a result of prohibition, not the drug itself.

Joy (Ma) et son fils, Jack, vivent enfermés à Akron, dans l'Ohio, dans la « Room », le seul « monde réel » que l'enfant ait jamais connu. Ils y partagent un lit, des toilettes, une baignoire, une armoire, la télévision et une cuisine rudimentaire. Dans cette pièce à la porte verrouillée en permanence, avec un velux comme seule fenêtre, Ma, du mieux qu'elle le peut, assure l'éducation et la sécurité de son fils, qui sont ses priorités. Ils sont approvisionnés régulièrement par "Vilain Nick" (Old Nick), qui visite la chambre quand il le veut tandis que Jack se cache dans l'armoire. Il est persuadé que "Room" est le monde, et que ce qu'il se passe dans la télé n'est pas la réalité. Alors que Jack vient de fêter ses 5 ans, Ma décide de lui expliquer qu'il existe un monde à l'extérieur de ces murs et comment elle est arrivée dans la pièce.
