William Nicholas Selig (né le 14 mars 1864 à Chicago et mort le 15 juillet 1948 (à 84 ans) à Los Angeles) est un producteur, réalisateur et scénariste américain, un des pionniers du cinéma américain.

Biographie

Né à Chicago dans l'Illinois, William Selig travailla comme un interprète de vaudeville et produisit un spectacle de troubadour à San Francisco après s'y être installé pour des raisons médicales. Un des acteurs de son spectacle, Bert Williams, devint une célébrité afro-américaine.

En 1894, Selig vit le cinétoscope de Thomas Edison à Dallas au Texas. Particulièrement curieux, Selig commença à travailler avec une caméra des frères Lumière et en 1896 fabriqua son propre système de projection cinématographique. Il fonda une entreprise, la Selig Polyscope Company à Chicago, l'un des premiers studio de cinéma aux États-Unis. Il collabore avec le photographe et documentariste Harry Buckwalter, installé à Denver, dont il diffuse les documentaires.

Selig fut le premier à s'installer sur la côte Ouest, déplaçant son entreprise à Los Angeles, sous la direction de Francis Boggs. Selig vint vers l'Ouest pour le climat sud-californien qui permettait de filmer en plein air l'année entière, pour le relief, qui pouvait être utilisé pour poser des décors alpins, sahariens, ou new-yorkais, mais aussi souhaitait-il se rapprocher de la Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC), une compagnie dont Selig était un membre peu disposé.

Plus tard, il créa un zoo pour disposer d'animaux qu'il utilisait dans son studio. Leo le lion, le futur logo de la MGM, en était un des résidents. Après avoir installé son studio dans les fondations du zoo, Selig laissa le studio de l'Echo Park à William Fox et la Fox Film Corporation.

Selig rechercha de nouveaux talents, comme Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, qui commença sa carrière dans sa compagnie en 1908, et Gilbert M. "Bronco Billy" Anderson, la première star de Western, qui joua dans The Adventures of Kathlyn (1913).

En 1915, une décision de la Cour suprême des États-Unis annula l'ensemble des brevets de la MGM. À court terme, cette décision arrangea Selig. Mais son studio fit faillite en 1918.

Selig fut responsable de son retournement de gloire ; il croyait que les courts métrages étaient l'avenir du cinéma. Sa foi était mal placée ; il continua cependant à produire des films indépendants jusque dans les années 1930, il perdit son zoo et dépensa sa fortune à la suite de la Grande Dépression. Il dut vendre les droits sur les livres qu'il avait obtenus pour ses films.

Pour sa contribution au cinéma américain, William Selig a une étoile sur Hollywood Walk of Fame au 6116 Hollywood Boulevard. En 1948, Selig reçut comme récompense un Academy Honorary Award en reconnaissance de son important rôle dans la construction de l'industrie du cinéma. William Selig a été incinéré et ses cendres ont été déposées dans le hall du Memory Columbarium dans la Chapel of the Pines Crematory à Los Angeles.

Deux sœurs (Grace Darmond et Derelys Perdue) et leur oncle partent à la recherche d'un trésor abandonné par ce dernier quelque part en Afrique Orientale. As described in a summary in a film publication, the serial involves the mystery of the murder of William Stillman (Wells) and the finding of the heir to his fortune. Silent Joe (Farnum) arrives in an effort to discover the murderer and prove that he is the true heir. He and the heroine Lou (Anderson) have their adventures in the mountainous terrain with its "vanishing trails." They are aided by The Shadow (Orlamond), a demented scientist with his trained dog, and several remarkable, death-dealing inventions.

As described in a film magazine, Tom Brown (Moore), a student at Harvard University, is engaged to Evelyn Ames (Daly). Her brother has become desperately involved with Marian Thorne (Winston). In an effort to protect his fiance's brother, the stigma associated with Marian Thorne's condition rests upon Tom. Evelyn breaks her engagement. Wilton Ames (Greene) crowns his borrowing of money from Tom by stealing a blank check and forging it for $300 to get Marion out of the city so that her condition may not get known. Gerald Thorne (McGrail), brother of Marian and stoke on the Harvard crew, refuses to enter the race after he is given a spurious note from his sister saying that she is leaving the city and wants to see him. Brown is put in has place and the race is won. Following the race, Gerald confronts him and charges him with being responsible for his sister's downfall. Evelyn demands that Tom marry Marian when Wilton finally confesses that he is the man involved. With Brown shown in his true light a happy reconciliation follows.

Annie, left orphaned after the death of her mother, goes to live in an orphanage where she tells her fellow orphans stories of ghosts and goblins. The matron of the orphanage finds Annie's closest relative, the abusive Uncle Thomp. Her uncle who puts her to hard work doing hard labor on his farm, belittling her all the while. Big Dave, a neighbor and tough cow-poke sees this and comes to her aid. Dave becomes her protector. Eventually Annie goes to live with Squire Goode and his large family. There, she entertains the children of the household with her stories, but sees her abusive aunt and uncle as her chief tormentors. She tells stories of how the goblins will take away the children if they are not good. Each story she tells is illustrated. War breaks out and Dave, who Annie adores, enlists. Uncle Thomp, hearing that Dave has been killed in action, takes pleasure in telling Annie the news. Broken-hearted, Annie falls ill and dies in bed, surrounded by family.

Silas Brown, a close-fisted country hotel-keeper in Hicksville, has a pretty daughter, Betty, who has a devoted suitor in Otis Perkins, a tpical country town boy. The curiosity of Betty is excited by a package marked for Francis King, "to be called for." For three weeks the package remains without a claimant. It accidentally falls to the floor and breaks open, showing a magnificent ball gown. Betty has been crying her pretty eyes out because her stingy father has refused her a party dress to wear at the church fair. She wears the unclaimed ball gown and makes a hit at the fair. Francis King, who is a traveling salesman, arrives the night of the fair, and admires Betty in her handsome gown, which he recognizes as one of his samples of a job lot. He sells the job lot to stingy old Silas at a low price because they are last year's samples. Betty confesses in tears, but King presents her with the sample dress, for which he has no further use. The jealousy of Otis is appeased while the salesman goes on to his next town.
