Vadivukkarasi is a Tamil film and television actress. She has acted in more than 350 films and 10 television serials in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. During her career, she has played various characters, playing lead, supporting as well as antagonistic roles. Notable director A. P. Nagarajan is her maternal uncle.

She got married to a business man in 1986 and the couple have a daughter padma priya. Later they got divorced in 1992. Then, she got live-in-relation ship with director D. Sabapathy from 1993 for many years and married him secretly in 1998, however due to some domestic issues and problems,they got separated in 2001.

The lead character Raman (Dileep), is an employee in a rice mill in Pune. He used to carry the rice to the mill for processing on a bicycle. Later he decides to buy an auto rickshaw and goes to his village to collect the money that his parents invested in his name in a post office in his hometown 30 years ago. One way to his hometown by train, he befriends a girl krishnendu, who happen's to be his father's arch enemy's daughter. Once he reaches his village he ends up in his father's rivals (krishnendu's) home and later comes to know that they are awaiting to kill him. Raman takes advantage of a tradition of their house that not even one drop of blood should fall inside the house to keep himself alive. Whether or not he comes alive forms rest of the plot of the movie.

The film is introduced when an old lady's (Nandita Das) son and daughter in law comes to stay on her house where she is solitary. Jayachandran (Simbu) is an orphan working in a hotel as a helper. It is assumed he gets his title name "Thotti Jaya" as he is found in a garbage bin as an infant. One day he beats and fends off a man who gets into a squbble with the hotel owner. The following night the hotel owner rewards him with cash and dreads him the next morning. He realizes people only respect people they fear. So he walks out from the hotel and reaches chennai. He is spotted by Seena Thana (Pradeep Rawat) and hired as a hench man.In an incident, Jaya gets entangled in a political and police trap. To escape from police, Jaya slips to Calcutta and goes into hiding. Meanwhile, Brinda (Gopika), a college lass from Kanyakumari comes to Calcutta on a tour along with her friends. Pimps operating in the red light area of Calcutta take away Brinda. Jaya accidentally meets Brinda when she tries to escape from the gang. He helps Brinda escape from the gang and takes her safely to Kanyakumari. On her way back home by train, Brinda starts admiring Jaya's niceties and gradually falls in love with him. When she expresses her desire, Jaya reciprocates her love, and both decide to enter into wedlock but little does he know that Brindha is actually the daughter of Seena Thana. Jaya takes away Brinda from her house and thus, earns the wrath of Seena Thana. Angered by this, Seena Thana summons his rowdy gangs and plots to bump off Thotti Jaya. How Thottijaya accomplishes his hopes of marrying Brinda is told in the remaining part of the story.
