Biographie
Né à Philadelphie dans une famille d'acteurs : son père William Carr était acteur ainsi que sa mère Mary Carr. À partir de 1915 il a été acteur dans des films muets, mais n'a jamais vraiment percé en tant qu'acteur. En 1945 il passe à la réalisation de films de Série B à Hollywood. La plupart de ses films sont des westerns. En 1948 il est co-réalisateur de la série Superman. Entre 1951 et 1968 il réalise surtout pour la télévision. Boroff is a mad scientist who has invented a "disintegrator gas" and plans to smuggle it to his buyers in Morovania. When his ship, the Carfax, gets stranded on outlying rocks in the first chapter, the Coast Guard comes to rescue him. The movie begins in World War I when a young man named Jimmy (Franchot Tone) unexpectedly becomes a hero by killing all the Germans in a machine gun nest. But he is then severely wounded and spends time in a hospital being cared for by a nurse, Rose (Gladys George), with whom he falls in love. But she is really in love with Jimmy’s buddy, Fred (Spencer Tracy), a carnival barker. However, when Fred doesn't return from the battlefield, the two think he’s been killed (when he was merely captured) and so they make wedding plans. Then when Fred returns he decides to support Jimmy and Rose marrying, even though it breaks his heart. After the war Fred meets up with Jimmy again and discovers that Jimmy is a racketeer who uses his battle skills to commit murder. So he tells Rose, who had no idea. She then reports her husband to the police so he will go to prison and be reformed. But Jimmy breaks out of prison and tries to take Rose on the lam with him. At this point Fred intervenes. Jimmy, feeling undeserving, commits suicide by police.

Dans une île du sud, Mary est la fille adoptive du pêcheur Old Thomas, et est surnommée White Among Flowers du fait de ses origines françaises et javanaise. Based upon a review in a film magazine, Amy (Stewart) and Andrew Forrester (Tearle) are happy in the first few weeks of their married life with the comforts that his $25,000 income brings. Andrew turns down a business opportunity with steel magnate Maurice Delabarre (Arden), but Delabarre decides he needs Andrew's business abilities, and invites the couple to his house. Amy finds her living standard wanting, and demands that Andrew accept the offer even though it will cause them to be separated. After he accepts, Amy throws herself into the gaieties of the social set and even challenges the position of Delabarre's wife Irma (Hopper). Irma, finding her social throne tottering, sends for Andrew. On his return, he judges Amy's new lifestyle by old standards and wonders whether she is a virtuous wife.

After his estate is confistcated, returning soldier Captain Scarlett rescues Princess Maria from being abducted while travelling. She's not exactly grateful.
