Aravindan Sivasamy (Jayam Ravi) is a 26-year-old youth who was brought up in an ashram run by a Harichandra (Nassar). The atmosphere that he grew, taught him high moral values, disciplines, dignity, devotion etc. But when he comes out of the place, his belief and learning will be questioned by the cancerous system. It unsettles him and make him fight against the immoral cultures of the society. He decides to taken on corrupt bureaucrats and his friend (Soori), a lawyer (Subbu Panchu) and journalist (C. Gopinath) along with his girlfriend (Amala Paul) join him in his mission to fight against the corruption.

Aarumugam, nicknamed Aaru (Surya Sivakumar), is a thug and dealmaker with a band of boys handpicked from the slums of Chennai. Saravanan's (Dhanush) parents manage to send him to Singapore after having gone through a severe financial drought thinking that he would pay off all their debts as soon as he lands in Singapore. Saravanan finds a job in Singapore through an agent and lands there with high hopes of earning 3 lakh and sending money back to his family. Living in a cramped apartment, Saravanan gets into an argument with a Chinese immigrant there. One day, the immigrant burns Saravanan's passport and Saravanan starts fighting him. The Chinese man is killed inadvertently in the fight. Everyone thinks that Saravanan is responsible, and he flees.
