Tarun Majumdar (born 1931) (also often credited as Tarun Mazumdar) (Bengali: তরুণ মজুমদার Torun Mojumdar) is a renowned Bengali Indian film director who makes films in Bengali and is notable for his depiction of Bengali culture and society. Many of his films are literature-based. He has recreated classics written by Bimal Kar, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, and Tarashankar Bandopadhyay on celluloid. Another feature of many of his films is the ample use of songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore to convey a range of emotions. Although often lacking in critical acclaim as some of his peers like Tapan Sinha, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, he has consistently produced box-office hits for over forty years.

Ayan Banerjee and Mahua Roychoudhury as the child-couple are still remembered lovingly. Such a simple story of love is entertaining as well as inspiring. Moreover, the blend of the pre-Independence political backdrop with the simple love life of the newlywed is excellently portrayed. On one hand you have the caricature of a typical Babu, who’s hell-bent on getting the ‘Raibahadur’ title from the British rulers played excellently by Utpal Dutt, and on the other hand you have Biswajit, a Swadeshi who is out to teach the British rulers a lesson. The main focus is on Ayan, a notorious boy. To curb him, his parents get him married to Utpal Dutt’s daughter, Mohua. But he creates havoc in his in-laws’ house as well. The interplay between the two, their becoming friends, missing each other, understanding responsibilities towards each other all make for a charming love story.

The Sanyals are a large extended family composed of the nonagarian grandfather, (Haradhan Banerjee), his son (Ranjit Mullick), daughter-in-law (Laboni Sarkar) who rules over the house like a female Hitler, reincarnated, and their children of whom two, a daughter (Koel Mallick) and son (Rishi Kaushik) live together in a beautiful mansion in Bhawanipur. There seems to be more servants in their house than family members, extending the virtues and parameters of the ideal ‘joint’ family. The film starts with everyone being excited about the return of the elder son (Babul Supriyo) from US, where he had gone for some business related work. However, all hell breaks loose, when he returns with a wife (Rituparna Sengupta) and her child from a former marriage in tow. Her first husband with underworld links was killed in police crossfire. Everyone accepts the new additions to the Sanyal family except the mother-in-law who refuses to even acknowledge her presence. The story revolves around how these two women build bridges to keep the joint family intact, with most of the credit going to the beautiful daughter-in-law who can sing, dance, cook, clean, supervise, nurse and even do matchmaking in her own way – in short, being politically appropriate and offering a perfect celluloid example of a matrimonial ‘bride wanted’ classified ad.

In ancient times in India there was a time when children got married and then when the time comes they live together. This film surely tells the story of that marriage and tells it greatly.
