Aditya Verma, fondly called Adi Chachu or Adi Uncle (Shahid Kapoor) by the children of his brother, lives in a large mansion in Mumbai with his brother (Mohnish Behl) who has a drinking problem, sister-in-law, sister and grandmother. He is the only one working in the family. He falls in love with a tuition teacher, Priya (Amrita Rao). They confess their feelings to each other and plan to get married. The movie begins with Amar (John Abraham) narrating the story of his family and himself. Amar is the son of Vidyadhar (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sumitra Patwardhan (Sharmila Tagore), a middle class couple in India. Amar lives and works in London and he sends some of his salary to them. One day Amar returns home with Jenny Mayer (Anusha Dandekar), his girlfriend, and announces his intention to get married to her. Initially reluctant, his parents are pleased and happy for the two. One day, Amar goes out celebrating with his friends, whilst his parents and Jenny organise a surprise party for him.

Mira (Neha) comes from a very wealthy family, however, she wants to get married to Akash Sharma (Jatin Grewal), who is not so wealthy. Against the wishes of her mother (Neena Kulkarni) and brother, Mira gets married to Akash. Akash and Mira start a life full of love. Once Rahul (Yash Pathak) is born Mira's family forgives them. Akash has his own small business of travel. He is dedicated towards work but would not earn money by cheating. On Rahul's first birthday Akash gives Mira the permission of inviting her family. At the venue Mira's family comes along and Mira's brother (Manish Wadhwa) insults Akash to the core. This infuriates Akash and he hits Mira's brother. Mira asks Akash to ask forgiveness from his brother which the former refuses. Mira's family forcibly takes her away from Akash. She is also forced to leave behind her son Rahul. Akash and Mira get divorced in the court and fearing that Akash might take her life in absence of Rahul, Mira is forced to give the custody of her only child to Akash, until he is at least 5 years old.

The central figure of the film is represented by a mysterious figure called "Gaja Gamini" (Madhuri Dixit), who inspires, arouses, and confuses the common man. "Gaja Gamini" is the inspiration behind Leonardo da Vinci's (Naseeruddin Shah) 'Mona Lisa', Kalidas' poem "Shakuntala", and a photojournalist named Shahrukh's (Shah Rukh Khan) photographs. The mysterious "Gaja Gamini" appears as four characters, one of them being Sangeeta, a blind girl from Banaras at the beginning of time, who inspires village women (Farida Jalal, Shilpa Shirodkar, and Shabana Aazmi) to revolt against a male-dominated system and carve a niche for women forever. Another character is Shakuntala, who is the subject of Kalidas' poem of the same name. Shakuntala incites jealousy in the women and love in the men around her, charming humans and animals alike in the forests of Kerala. "Gaja Gamini" is also Mona Lisa during the Renaissance, the object of painter Leonardo da Vinci's obsession. Finally, Monika, the most confusing sector of the film, is supposed to represent the woman of the New Millennium. Kamdev, the God of Love (Inder Kumar), walks the earth throughout history, attempting to win the love of "Gaja Gamini".
