John Shane Porteous (born 17 August 1942) is an Australian television character actor, TV screenplay scriptwriter, theatre actor, animation layout artist, and animation voice artist. As a scriptwriter, he is sometimes credited as John Hanlon.

Biographie

Shane Porteous is best known for playing original character Dr Terence Elliott in the television drama series A Country Practice during its twelve-year run on the Seven Network 1981-93, a role for which he won the coveted Silver Logie in 1992. He has also won AWGIE Awards for his various scriptwriting projects.

Other TV credits include: Catch Kandy, Homicide, Matlock Police, Certain Women 1973-76, The Box in 1974, Number 96 in 1977, Glenview High, The Restless Years, Neighbours, Home and Away, Blue Heelers and Heartbreak High.

He has also written scripts for several television series, including Neighbours and Home and Away, sometimes under the name John Hanlon.

Porteous has performed in many stage plays, among them Hamlet, Death of a Salesman (1970), the Sydney Theatre Company's production of King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing. He has most recently (June 2010) completed a touring performance of Codgers, with Ron Haddrick (among others).

He was a regular at the Q Theatre in Penrith, New South Wales and was also the ambassador for "The Q", which was demolished in August 2005 and moved to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Shane Porteous has also provided animation services to Hanna-Barbera, and has created layouts for the film versions of "The Magic Pudding" and "Blinky Bill".

He is referenced in the popular Australian song I'm So Post Modern by The Bedroom Philosopher.

The story is about a little girl during the beginning of the Second World War. When the German soldiers invade, she and her family are forced to hide in the woods. When her grandmother gets sick, her father goes into town for medicine and disappears. Sarah goes out to pick berries and when she returns, the rest of her family is gone. Sarah is forced to survive alone in the woods with only the animals for company. One day she sees some resistance fighters attempt to destroy a bridge the Nazis use to transport weapons. When their attempt fails, she decides to destroy the bridge herself, hoping that her actions may end the war. Over time she is successful, but afterwards sadly realizes that what she has done will not end the war and walks away into the forest.

Sydney homicide detective Sergeant Scobie Malone (Jack Thompson) and his offsider (Shane Porteous) investigate the murder of Helga (Judy Morris), whose corpse is found in the basement of the Sydney Opera House. Malone had met Helga previously and discovers she was a high class prostitute who was also a mistress of the Minister for Culture (James Workman) and involved with film director Jack Savannah (Joe Martin). In flashback it is shown that Helga was blackmailing the minister and his wife (Jacqueline Knott), along with a crime boss, Mr Sin (Noel Ferrier).
