His first movie was Koodal Nagar starring Bharath, Bhavana, and Sandhya. His second film Thenmerku Paruvakaatru won three National Film Awards, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

The film is introduced when an old lady's (Nandita Das) son and daughter in law comes to stay on her house where she is solitary. Every often her son and her daughter in law notice that she goes to the beach prays in the garden every night. When they ask her why she is going to the beach she says that she is waiting for her husband to come. The son gets angry and says that you have been waiting for 25 years, he is not going to come. Whilst the mum goes to the beach the couple dig where she is praying and find a skeleton. They report to the police and the case is handled by Inspector Agnes (Varsha Ashwathi) who begins interrogating the old lady. The old lady tells her past.

Set on the backdrop of Theni, the story is about Murugaiyan (Vijay Sethupathi) who is a goat shepherd and he has a loving mother Veerayi (Tamil: வீராயி)(Saranya Ponvannan). She is a widow and struggles hard to raise Murugan and has an overflowing affection for him. Meanwhile, there is a gang which attacks the villagers at night and steal their goats. Murugan along with his group manages to catch one of the members in an attack and discover that it is a girl. Her name is Pechi (Vasundhra Chiyertra) and her family steals goat for livelihood. While Murugan develops feelings for her, Pechi's family is known to be quite dangerous. Veerayi comes to know this and asked her son(Murugan) to marry a girl of her choice.

The story is set in a suburb of Madurai. Suryan (Bharath) and Chandran (Bharath) are twins. Suryan, the elder of the two is soft spoken guy who works at a local lending library and he falls in love with Manimekala (Bhavana), daughter of Namasivayam (Mahadevan) the local politician-don and MLA. Chandran, the younger one, works as a mortuary assistant in the local government hospital and he's one among Namasivayam’s bad guys who are in charge of his election campaign. Chandran is romantically linked to a local girl,Tamizhselvi (Sandhya).
