Salil Chowdhury (Bengali: সলিল চৌধুরী, Hindi: सलिल चौधरी, Malayalam: സലില്‍ ചൗധരി) was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam films. He was also a poet and a playwright. He is affectionately called Salilda by his admirers.

His musical ability was widely recognized and acknowledged in the Indian film industry. He was an accomplished arranger and was proficient in several musical instruments, including flute, the piano, and the esraj. He was also widely acclaimed and admired for his inspirational and original poetry.

The central character is the Post Master who is given a mysterious cheque for ₹500,000 to be given to anyone who will use it to benefit the people of the village. There is a postman who pretends to be lame and is secretly rich and may have sent the cheque. Then there is the postmaster's wife, who is sick and would rather use the money to cure her illness, and his beautiful daughter Seema (played by Sadhana), who has a crush on the village school master. Meanwhile all the greedy and influential people of the village are busy trying to convince everybody why they are most deserving of the money; they include the village priest, the land lord, the money lender, the village doctor and the school master, who is by far the most respected. They all decide democracy is the best means and decide to hold an election where the winner gets the money. The movie is a satirical look at democracy through various twists and turns in the plot, interweaved with a simple love story.

Arun est un peintre misanthrope dont les œuvres commencent à avoir du succès. Alors qu'il s'installe dans son nouvel appartement du vieux Mumbai, il y découvre des enregistrements vidéo réalisés par une jeune épouse musulmane, Yasmin, qui raconte sa vie à l'intention de son frère. Au cours d'une exposition de ses toiles, Arun fait la connaissance de Shai avec laquelle il a une aventure d'une nuit. Shai est une jeune et riche Indienne expatriée aux USA, venue à Mumbai pour s'adonner à sa passion de la photographie. Elle se lie d'amitié avec Munna, un blanchisseur qui lui sert de guide dans la mégalopole. En échange de ses services, elle lui confectionne un portfolio car, bien que pauvre, vivant dans un bidonville et appartenant à une basse caste, le jeune homme rêve de percer à Bollywood. Munna qui assure également le nettoyage du linge d'Arun, fournit l'adresse de l'artiste à Shai qui commence à le photographier à son insu.

Le film présente principalement les événements de la vie de Vivekananda de sa naissance à 1897, quand il retourne en Inde de l'Ouest. Le film commence avec la naissance de Narendranath Datta (nom pré-monastique de Swami Vivekananda) et montre l'entourage de la famille Datta célébrant l'événement. Puis, vient la scène où Narendranath voit son père Vishwanath Datta donner de l'argent, des vêtements et de la nourriture à des personnes pauvres et en détresse. The film takes place in Calcutta, 1971. The story begins with rehabilitation official Venu (Mohanlal) coming to Calcutta in one of his regular visits to shift about 35 to 40 refugee families to the Andaman Islands. The current rehabilitation plan is that only those who fall under the category of schedule caste farmers. People in Andaman, too, are not happy about taking in refugees. All the refugees have been staying in Permanent Liability Camp in Rana ghat, West Bengal for the past two decades. Experiencing the shattered lives of poor displaced people deeply hurts Venu in his silent moments alone in his small lodge room frequently finds himself lost in the thoughts about the lives of the refuge seekers he meets during the day. Living an oppressed life, their only hope being the occasional promises of land, cattle, and other grants by the bureaucratic state.
