Rizwan Khan est un petit garçon musulman qui grandit à Borivali, dans la banlieue de Mumbai (Inde), entouré de l'affection de sa mère. Adulte, Rizwan rejoint son frère émigré aux États Unis où sa belle-sœur lui diagnostique un syndrome d'Asperger (l'un des segments du Trouble du spectre de l'autisme). Alors qu'il travaille pour l'entreprise familiale, Rizwan fait la connaissance et tombe amoureux de Mandira, Indienne et hindoue. Malgré la différence de religion, ils se marient et vivent heureux avec le fils que Mandira a eu d'un précédent mariage. Mais après le 11 septembre les choses changent, la famille est en butte à l'ostracisme anti-musulman et, accablée de douleur, Mandira rejette son mari qu'elle rend responsable du drame qui les frappe. Pour reconquérir la femme qu'il aime, Rizwan entreprend un long périple afin de faire savoir à tous que "Son nom est Khan et qu'il n'est pas un terroriste".

The police are called to investigate the death of a woman during a riot in the walled city of Delhi. She was killed by a stone thrown by an agitated mob. The woman killed is known in the community as "Sardari Begum" (Kiron Kher), a popular singer and courtesan. The religious nature of the incident and the impending elections combine to attract the media's attention. When a young reporter covering the funeral, Tehzeeb Abbasi (Rajina Raj Bisaria), discovers her father among the mourners, her curiosity prompts her to investigate further. Raj Solanki (Naseeruddin Shah) règne sur la pègre de Mumbai. Jai découvre que Solanki est son père, mais ne renonce pas pour autant à l'affronter. Solanki accepte alors de se rendre à la police. Mais Deepak et David prennent la mère de Jai en otage. Jai, Sandhya et Solanki parviennent à la libérer, mais Solanki, après avoir révélé à Deepak sa relation de parenté avec Jai, meurt en sauvant ses deux fils désormais réconciliés.

The story begins in a courtroom where a teenage boy from a city slum is on trial for stabbing his father to death. Final closing arguments have been presented, and the judge then instructs the jury to decide whether the boy is guilty of murder. The judge further informs them that a guilty verdict will be accompanied by a mandatory death sentence. The twelve-man jury retires to a private room, where they spend a short while getting acquainted before they begin deliberating. It is immediately apparent that the jurors have already decided that the boy is guilty, and that they plan to return their verdict quickly, without taking time for discussion – with the sole exception of Juror Number 8 (K.K. Raina). His is the only "not guilty" vote in a preliminary tally. He explains that there is too much at stake for him to go along with the verdict without at least talking about it first. His vote annoys the other jurors, particularly Juror 7 (M. K. Raina), who has tickets to Dilip Kumar's movie Mashal.
