The film takes place in Vukovar, a city on the border between Serbia and Croatia, in a country which used to be called SFR Yugoslavia, on the eve of the country's breakup. It is a typical love story, between a Croat woman Ana (Mirjana Joković) and a Serb man Toma (Boris Isaković), who marry one another with the blessing of both families right before the Battle of Vukovar. Their harmonic community is brutally broken apart with the start of a civil war. Not only they but everyone around them, against their will, are brought into the craziness of war which divides them from family and friends. Divided, living through hell, they still hope that the horrors of war will stop and that their newborn baby will be able to have a fresh start.

Le film raconte l'histoire de deux frères, Dragoslav et Kosta Kovacevski. Dragoslav revient d'URSS et, accusé à tort, il est emprisonné. A madcap comedy featuring a band of roving musicians whose music is just a cover for the fact that they are actually con men. They find ample opportunity to ply their trade amidst all the confusion as people flee the invading Nazis. They tour the country and vie with each other for how much they can pilfer, scam, con, or lift from the unsuspecting citizenry. Au cours des années 70, Belgrade connut une grave épidémie de variole. Variola vera est le récit de la vie d’un hôpital mis en quarantaine sanitaire et des multiples tensions à l’intérieur de cette micro-société yougoslave. Totalement isolée du monde extérieur, toute une galerie de personnages, apparaissant petit à petit sous leur vrai jour, est dépeinte. À l’extérieur, les autorités essaient par tous les moyens de cacher la vérité et de minimiser le danger. Le film est aussi une violente critique d’une certaine société qui se voudrait juste et exempte de fautes.
