En 1939, deux agents secrets britanniques Harry Deniston et Richard Byrd opèrent en Allemagne quelques mois avant la déclaration de guerre. Ils ont pour mission de convaincre un savant allemand inventeur d'un gaz mortel, de leur en fournir la formule plutôt qu'aux nazis. Capturés ils parviennent à s'échapper, mais sont poursuivis par leurs geôliers, ils décident de se séparer, Deniston se retrouve alors en plein forêt nez à nez avec Lydia, une gitane qui le prend sous sa protection, pour mieux le soustraire aux allemand, elle le grime en gitan et lui perce les oreilles afin qu'il puisse porter des anneaux d'or. Malgré la différence de culture une idylle va naître entre Lydia et Deniston. Alors que Byrd sera tué par les Allemands sans qu'il soit arrivé à accomplir sa mission, c'est Deniston qui parvenu à se faire admettre dans le clan des gitans et aidé de ces derniers qui réussira à soustraire la formule au professeur avant de passer la frontière.

En 1932 à Chicago, un policier est tué lors d'un cambriolage d'une épicerie. Frank Wiecek et Tomek Zaleska sont arrêtés et la justice prononce à leur encontre une peine à perpétuité. Onze ans plus tard, la mère de Frank, convaincue de l'innocence de son fils, lequel n'a jamais cessé de la clamer, passe une annonce dans le Chicago Times, demandant que des éléments nouveaux soient communiqués et offrant 5 000 dollars de récompense. Le rédacteur en chef du journal demande au reporter P.J. McNeal de mener sa propre enquête sur cette affaire. Le journaliste montre une réticence et ne semble intéressé que par les ventes que peut générer cette histoire mais peu à peu, il se laisse convaincre de l'innocence de Frank Wiecek. Il se décide à enquêter mais se heurte à une résistance de la part des autorités.

The story begins as Hollywood press agent Bill Dunnigan (Fred MacMurray), who works for a fictional movie studio, arrives by train with the body of Polish-born actress Olga Treskovna (Alida Valli), in her hometown, a city referred to affectionately by its population as "Coaltown" because of its coal mining industry. In a voiceover narrated by Dunnigan, we learn that he was in love with Olga, although we never find out if she truly reciprocated his love. He has brought her back to "Coaltown" to honor her deathbed request - to be buried there. After encountering some hostility from the local funeral director who resents Olga's father because he was crooked, Dunnigan enlists the services of Father Paul (Frank Sinatra), the local priest, who pulls some strings to grant Olga's request.
