Velu as Ghilli (Vijay), is a wannabe kabbadi champion who is the son of Assistant Commissioner of Police Sivasubramanian (Ashish Vidyarthi). Sivasubramanian is not fond of his son, constantly chiding him for his lack of interest in studies and his love for kabaddi. His mother (Janaki Sabesh), on the other hand, dotes on him and his younger sister Bhuvana ('Baby' Jennifer) is the typical sharp and inquisitive schoolgirl, constantly getting Velu into trouble with his father, but nevertheless still adores him.

The movie opens in an engineering college in Ooty with a narration of the characters. Rajiv Samuel (Abbas) is a computer engineering student and is one of the top students in the college, whereas Rajesh (R. Madhavan) is a mechanical engineering student who is the bad guy of the college. A mutual problem between the two groups led by both Samuel and Rajesh puts both Sam and Rajesh at loggerheads and they pull pranks on each other to get the other in trouble. It culminates into a fist fight but is soon broken up their friends. In the fight, Rajesh punches Sam in the face, which is against the rule, and Sam promises to return the favor in future. They graduate from the college soon and promise to not see each other ever again. Sam goes abroad for job, while Rajesh stays back in India saying that he does not want to leave his motherland.

Karthikeyan (Arjun) is a photographer-cum-editor working in Indian Express. Chitra (Meena) is a bank employee. Both reside in Navi Mumbai. Karthik meets Chitra while opening a bank account. While returning home, Karthik again meets her in a train. He offers his seat but Chitra does not want to accept it. During a train strike he invites her to travel in an auto to reduce expenses, but she declines. When Chitra hesitated to travel in the same train with Karthik, he became angry and explained that he talked to her because both are from same area and he says he will never talk to her anymore. After some days Chitra volunteerily talks to him. Karthik, in return, accompanies her to a police station to get back her snatched handbag. Karthik invites Chitra to his home to meet his parents.

The story begins when Jenny (Jyothika) and Shiva (Vijay) are born in different states of India they meet as babies, when their parents left they were pulled apart. Shekhar (Arvind Swamy) est le fils de parents hindous traditionnels dans un village côtier du Tamil Nadu. Étudiant en journalisme à Bombay, Shekhar rentre régulièrement à la maison pour rendre visite à sa famille. Au cours de l'un de ses voyages, il rencontre Shaila Banu (Manisha Koirala). Timide, Shaila fuit Shekhar, mais les efforts constants de Shekhar pour la séduire finissent par être couronnés de succès et elle en tombe amoureuse. Les deux pères refusent l'idée d'un mariage. Le père de Shekhar lui ordonne de trouver une autre compagne et le père de Shaila veut la marier au plus vite avec un musulman. Le père de Shekhar menace son fils de ne plus jamais lui adresser la parole s'il épouse cette musulmane. Sous le coup de la colère, Shekhar repart pour Bombay. Suivent plusieurs semaines de relation épistolaire entre Shekhar et Shaila qui finit par s'enfuir de la maison pour rejoindre Shekhar à Bombay où ils se marient en hâte.
