Mumtaz, née le 31 juillet 1947 à Bombay est une actrice indienne.

D'origines indo-iraniennes, ses parents se nomment Abdul Sameed Askari et Sardar Begum Habib Agha. Elle commence sa carrière d'actrice à l'âge de 12 ans. Elle est remarquée en 1965 dans le film à grand budget Mere Sanam. Ce succès est suivi d'un autre film important, Patthar Ke Sanam (1967). Elle est récompensée par le Filmfare Award de la meilleure actrice en 1971 pour Khilona. Elle est sélectionnée deux fois pour le Filmfare Award du meilleur second rôle féminin pour Ram Aur Shyam (1967) et Aadmi Aur Insaan (1970).

Le 29 mai 1974, elle épouse le millionnaire Mayur Madhvani dont elle a deux enfants, Natasha et Tanya. Elle quitte les plateaux en 1977 après Aaina, un échec important malgré la participation de l'acteur Rajesh Khanna et la mise en scène de Kailasam Balachander. Elle apparait une toute dernière fois dans le film Aandhiyan (1989), un autre échec. En 1996, elle reçoit un Filmfare Award pour l'ensemble de sa carrière.

Ram Shashtri, an upper Caste Hindu Brahmin, lives in a small village in India, but has a very large family, consisting of his wife, Savitri, five daughters and three sons. Ram performs prayers and last rites for the Hindu community, and it is through these meagre earnings that the entire household lives on. The eldest is a daughter by name Shalini, silently falls in love with Ashok J. Rao, the son of the Village Mukhiya, Jagannath. As the Raos are of a much lower caste than the Shastris, Ashok is told by his dad that he cannot marry Shalini. One day, after an argument with his dad, he leaves to join the army, and a few weeks later a telegram is received by Jagannath that Ashok is no more. As Ram is unable to get more assignments, Savitri attempts to poison the entire family, but Shalini stops her in time. She gets a job and is able to get the family to get back up on its feet. Her brother, Gautam, wants to be a doctor, so she arranges for his studies, while her sister, Poorna, wants to be a singer, and a music teacher is arranged. Then Shalini leaves her village to travel to Poona to get her brother's admission to Medical College, with considerable success, and from thence on there is no looking back for this family. Shalini gets a raise and an offer for a big pay-raise if she re-locates to the capital, Delhi, which she does. She sends plenty of money so her dad does not have to work, and her siblings can carry on with their respective studies. Then Shalini's sister, Girja, meets a young man, Raju, and both fall in love. Gautam, now a doctor, is in love with the Tehsildar's daughter, Usha, and wants to marry her. Shalini returns home to attend the two marriages. The marriages take place with great pomp and ceremony and everyone compliments Shalini, for without her efforts, the family would have been destitute. But after the weddings, her life will be changed forever, she will lose all respect from her family, she will be treated as an outcast and forced to leave the house.

According to a myth, when snakes are of certain age, they can assume human form. Thus, the film begins with a male and a female in their human forms, singing and dancing amorously with each other. When the male turns back into a snake, he is shot by a member of a hunting party, who thought the snake was going to attack the woman. The rest of the story deals with the female taking revenge on the group of friends responsible for her lover's death. In the end, Vijay is the only one alive and the nagin dies before killing him and realizes that she was wrong and that her revenge destroyed many lives just like her own life was destroyed. Near death, she sees her beloved in the sky calling out to her. She dies and reunites with him in heaven.

Rajesh Khanna is in love with Mumtaz in their college days. In a house like any other, live a lawyer, his wife their 3 sons, Naeem, Saleem and Nadeem and their nanny Surayya. During his life the lawyer has made many enemies,the convicts he has put in jail. On a stormy night one of those convicts, now a free man, arrives at his doorstep to seek revenge. Although the lawyer does not fear his imminent death, the convict, named Raja Daaku says he will kill off the lawyers whole family. The lawyer's wife tries to save her husband but gets shot in the process and her husband meets the same fate. The three boys are separated in the confusion. Surayya runs in desperation with the only child she can save, Nadeem, and the other two boys run off by themselves. Naeem manages to catch a train but Saleem is not quick enough and is left behind.

Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) is an engineer, who is in love with a rich girl named Rekha (Mumtaz). Rekha's snobby father disapproves because Vijay is not wealthy, and so he has arranged for her to be married to a son of an evil politician. The evil politician is played by Madan Puri. Rekha's father and the politician frame Vijay for a crime that he didn't commit, and he goes to jail. When he's in jail, he becomes friends with three other prisoners. All four men escape from jail. After Vijay reconnects with Rekha, they all go to a small village called Shantinagar and help save the village from the evil politician and the bandits that terrorize the town. The evil politician is arrested. Rekha's father feels remorse and accepts Vijay. Vijay and his three prisoner friends go back to jail. However, the film ends on an optimistic tone indicating that their good deeds will be rewarded (i.e. that their prison sentences will be shortened).
