Elle est la première épouse de Charlie Chaplin en octobre 1918 (elle n'a alors que 16 ans). Le couple divorce en 1921 . Ils ont un enfant qui meurt trois jours après sa naissance. Le divorce fut en partie causé par ce décès.
Elle meurt à 42 ans, d'une pneumonie, le 20 juillet 1944. Elle est enterrée au Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Elle commence sa longue carrière encore enfant, jouant déjà dans six films quand elle n'a que onze ans et elle continuera sans interruption jusqu'à sa mort, à l'âge de 42 ans.Elle est la première épouse de Charlie Chaplin en octobre 1918 (elle n'a alors que 16 ans). Lors de l'offensive japonaise en Indonésie, un médecin originaire de l'Arkansas, le Dr Wassell, chercheur passionné engagé dans la Marine se consacre à soigner les blessés américains d'un navire coulé par les Japonais. Au moment ce l'offensive japonaise sur Java un navire accepte d'embarquer les blessés capables de marcher mais pas la petite douzaine sur des civières. Le Dr Wassell reste avec eux, les ramène à l'hôpital de campagne plusieurs fois bombardé, parvient à les faire transporter par un convoi anglais à travers la jungle, use de la ruse pour les faire monter à bord d'un cargo surchargé et arrive enfin en Australie.

Il tombe rapidement amoureux de sa collaboratrice dans l'affaire, Linda Mason, qui se révèle une excellente chanteuse et danseuse. Lorsque Lila largue Ted, celui-ci vient retrouver son ancien partenaire à l'hôtel et danse, ivre, avec Linda. Le lendemain, Ted ne sait plus avec qui il a dansé mais il pense qu'elle serait une bonne remplaçante pour Lila. Il se lance à sa recherche, Jim lui ayant caché par jalousie qu'il s'agit de sa collègue. Quand Ted retrouve Linda, il tombe amoureux d'elle et tente de la convaincre de faire du cinéma. Quelque temps plus tard, Jim vient sur le tournage du film (ayant pour sujet son hôtel) et surprend la jeune fille au milieu d'une scène. Ted ayant retrouvé Lila, tout le monde s'avère heureux.

The Stooges are stowaways on a boxcar headed for Hollywood (to be exact, a furniture consignment to Hollywood). Fully expecting for no good reason to become stars, and dressed for the occasion, the Stooges sneak into a movie studio—where they are mistaken for three new executives who are due to take over the facility. Given the authority, they promptly abuse it and take over the production of a movie set in hopes of shooting a blockbuster movie. Curly gets off on the wrong foot when, unable to light his match for a smoke, spots an actress receiving a pedicure (silent star Mildred Harris). He then strikes the match on her bare foot, startling her. Angered, she is about to storm off the set until the trio convince her to stay. The trio then act out the love scene as they want it filmed, leading its stars to abandon the set.

When World War I breaks out, Jack Clark (Walter Pidgeon), a Tin Pan Alley songwriter in love with chorus girl Flo Thompson (Jane Winton), enlists in the Army with his pal Lefty (Tom Dugan) and is sent to France, where they spend their time plunking out tunes while enemy shells whiz past their head. There, Jack meets Madelon (Mildred Harris), a little French singer who falls madly in love with him. Eventually, a stray bullet hits Jack during combat and loses the use of his right arm, rendering him unable to wield a pencil to write music or play a piano. He is sent home back to the United States, and upon his return, he is jilted by his former sweetheart Flo and when she senses that Jack isn't going to be much of a gravy train, she sends him packing and Jack becomes a derelict. Madelon, in the meantime, crosses the ocean and finds work singing in a cabaret; Jack finds her by chance and, in his excitement at seeing her once again, recovers the use of the arm. As he sits down at the piano to play for Madelon, Jack knows that he has at last found the woman of his dreams, and Jack writes a hit song dedicated to her.
