Michael “Mick” Lally (10 November 1945 – 31 August 2010) was an Irish stage, film and television actor. He departed from a teaching career for acting during the 1970s. Though best known in Ireland for his role as Miley in the television soap Glenroe, Lally’s stage career spanned several decades, and he was involved in feature films such as Alexander and the Academy Award-nominated The Secret of Kells. He died in August 2010 after a battle with emphysema. Many reports cited him as one of Ireland's finest and most recognisable actors.

Brendan, un apprenti moine de 12 ans, vit avec son oncle, le sévère Abbé Cellach, au sein de l'abbaye de Kells. Cet établissement important abrite de nombreux moines copistes et enlumineurs (dans le courant des VIII et IX siècles, l'Irlande est réputée pour cet art). Brendan rêverait de devenir enlumineur à son tour. Malheureusement, l'Abbé Cellach est absorbé par d'autres préoccupations : faire face à la menace des Vikings. Obsédé par sa tâche, il accueille d'assez mauvaise grâce Frère Aidan d'Iona, le plus fameux des enlumineurs. Mais ce dernier découvre vite en Brendan des talents de dessinateur insoupçonnés. Il décide d'en faire son apprenti… Au cours de ce parcours initiatique, Brendan devra aussi aller au cœur de la forêt, royaume des divinités païennes du monde celte, où il affrontera les pires dangers au côté de la jeune magicienne Aisling et devra surmonter ses peurs, dont le terrible "grand sombre (Krancrois) ", démon des profondeurs.
