Michael Watkins a commencé sa carrière comme directeur de la photographie avant de devenir réalisateur, essentiellement pour la télévision. Il a remporté à deux reprises, en 1990 et 1991, le Primetime Emmy Award de la meilleure photographie pour une série pour son travail sur la série Code Quantum. Years ago, Jason Copeland, now 24, failed his final exams and did not graduate Johnson High School, for which he still holds his History teacher, Mr. Kroft responsible. He decides to take revenge and enters the school with a 12-gauge shotgun, a revolver, and a massive supply of ammunition. He first starts shooting around, hitting several students. After shooting Mr. Kroft, he decides to take as many hostages as possible in one room. Among them is Aaron Sullivan, a gifted but lazy student who is assigned to answer the phone. Meanwhile, Frankie Rodriguez, the class clown, is ordered to be the message boy, picking up and delivering information and other things from the FBI to Jason.

The world of the Hollywood detective division is exposed via The Glitter Dome (the bar they frequent and a slang reference to Hollywood, California). When the investigation of a high profile studio president is going nowhere, the case is handed over to two experienced detectives, Al Mackey (Garner) and Marty Welborn (Lithgow), on this case, however, they need help. They get it from a pair of vice cops, called the Ferret and the Weasel, and a pair of street cops commonly referred to as the Street Monsters, due to their fondness for violence.

Starting in 1951, Faye Price is a famous Hollywood actress who, while entertaining the troops during the Korean War, falls in love with Ward Thayer, a rich heir. Seven years later, they are married, with four children. Ward loses his job and considers suicide, but Faye offers to start acting again. Originally, this upsets Ward, because he wasn't fond of moving to Fairfax, California. On the set of her new movie, the director and producer fight each other and the director eventually leaves the set. Faye offers to direct the scene herself. At first, nobody thinks she will be able to, but she turns out to direct the scene with a lot of success. She is soon offered directing jobs at television series, including Zane Grey Theater. Meanwhile, her home life is less fortunate. Ward has been depressed since going bankrupt and he has started an affair. When Faye finds out, she immediately kicks him out of the house. However, she soon agrees to give him another chance and they decide to work together on films as director and producer. Their film debut becomes a blockbuster success with positive reviews and she is contracted by Universal.
