New York theatrical producer Larry O'Brien (Conte) plans to found a motion picture company in Hollywood. He buys an old studio which was unused since the days of silent movies. There he's shown the office where a famous director was murdered twenty years earlier. Although there were many suspects the case hasn't been solved. O'Brian becomes fascinated by the subject and decides to make a film based on the case. To this end he begins interviewing the surviving participants and soon gets into danger himself. In the end it turns out that the murderer is the victim's jealous brother.

In the film, Conrad Veidt stars as Erik the Great, a sinister stage Magician who falls in love with a woman half his age, Julie, played by Mary Philbin. A young thief, Mark Royce (played by Fred MacKaye) is caught stealing from Erik's apartment and is taken in at Julie's suggestion. Secretly she falls in love with the new apprentice. However, Erik's other apprentice, Buffo (played by Leslie Fenton) becomes aware of Julie's love for Mark, and driven by jealousy tells his master. Buffo is later found killed, and Mark is the prime suspect.

William Tudor has a huge debt and is forced to give up his family castle. He sells it to war millionaire John Kershaw and goes to London to visit his granddaughter Irene. Meanwhile, a huge chandelier crashes down on Christopher's head. He is now killed, which makes Irene and Owen able to reunite. Owen buys the castle back from John and Irene's grandfather comes back to his home.

Le faux comte Karamzin est un Don Juan qui vit d'escroqueries à Monte-Carlo, où il semble avoir dû s'exiler avec deux fausses princesses prétendument russes. Cet homme et ses deux complices féminines sont recherchés par la police pour usage de faux bons aux porteurs et organisation de casino clandestins. Ce comte imposteur tente néanmoins, avec l'aide de ses deux fausses cousines, de s'infiltrer dans la haute société sans en avoir vraiment les codes, qu'il mime cependant à la perfection par des gestes de courtoisie ou en feignant d'avoir de l'honneur. L'unique but du trio est de pouvoir s'emparer frauduleusement de sommes conséquentes, que ce soit auprès d'hommes influents ou de femmes trop crédules ou notoirement romantiques pour ne pas succomber à la tentation. Cet homme sans scrupules séduit, vole et trompe toute proie docile qui se trouve sur son passage : la femme de l'ambassadeur américain, sa propre femme de chambre et même la fille mentalement dérangée de son faux monnayeur. Mais la chance finit par tourner le dos au trio.
