Ange en exil, Max chemine à travers les Etats-Unis pour venir en aide aux humains. Dans une petite bourgade du Maine, il fait la connaissance d'une jeune femme sans famille nommée Sally. Comme elle se bat dans la vie pour obtenir la garde de son jeune frère, Max comprend immédiatement que sa nouvelle mission est de l'aider. Mais Jo, un ange très strict, est envoyé pour expliquer à son collègue que ce n'est pas ce qu'on attend exactement de lui. En effet, la mission de Max n'est pas d'aider Sally, mais Karl, le gérant d'une petite usine de décorations de Noël. Ses affaires ne marchent guère car ses produits traditionnels ne rencontrent plus le succès d'antan. D'abord ennuyé, Max remarque que Karl connaît Sally.

A German mother, Elisabeth Vincken (Linda Hamilton), who had already lost her eldest son in the Battle of Stalingrad and whose husband is a cook serving in the German army, and her son, Fritz, are seeking refuge in a cabin near the front lines in the Ardennes forests region of western Europe. They are invaded by three American soldiers and then soon after three German soldiers, and after much resistance the mother manages to convince the enemy soldiers to put aside their differences for one night and share a Christmas dinner. The Germans were planning to kill the Americans, but eventually they and the American soldiers share their rations to make a proper Christmas dinner. This includes homemade cookies and other goodies. Throughout the night the Americans and Germans befriend each other, despite the fact that they will eventually have to return to the war. The next morning an American MP soldier comes and is surprised by what he sees. As he learns of what has happened he turns his rifle on the American soldiers and begins talking with the Germans. Realizing the officer is really a German soldier who has infiltrated the American lines, the Americans surrender and the three German soldiers get their weapons. The German infiltrator then orders the three other soldiers to execute the Americans. Just before he is about to shoot the mother, one of the German soldiers knocks him out, saving her. The soldiers depart, with the Americans taking the German infiltrator as a prisoner of war, and also one of the Germans, who is only fourteen - neither side wants him to die in a future battle. The Germans also return to their side. All say good bye and wish each other good luck for the rest of the war. In the present day, an elder Fritz (Michael Sinelnikoff) is visited by Private Jimmy Rassi's grandson, Christopher, with Fritz handing over Rassi's dogtags.

Billy Hastings (Kevin Zegers) est un jeune garçon timide qui emménage avec sa mère (Anne Archer) dans le Vermont à la suite d'un accident de voiture qui a tué son père et qui a fait de Billy un handicapé d'une jambe. Il achète un poney mourant dans un cirque miteux, qui après quelques soins retrouve la santé et donne naissance à un poulain, qui devient une licorne en deux jours ; il l'appelle Nico. Le secret est bientôt dévoilé et l'animal magique attire la convoitise de toute la ville, dont les bourreaux du garçon, qui cherche à l'attacher à un arbre et lui prendre sa créature. Billy se voit obligé de s'enfuir dans la montagne pour libérer Nico. Mais il est rapidement traqué par la police, un chasseur et la presse.

Snake nails the apartment door shut: they are determined to come clean. Michele awakens to discover she has been “betrayed” by her lover and is trapped. Barricaded in their apartment, they become each other’s hostage. As the days go by, their resolve ebbs and flows as they dig deeper and deeper into themselves. The hook to heroin addiction is the false sense of immunity to the state at large but as withdrawal starts, this cocooned existence abruptly unravels. Reality sharpens, intensifies, and re-awakens. Sensations flare, as Michele and Snake scrape at the walls, the camera becomes a monitor, never once leaving the apartment. When almost totally withdrawn, Snake discovers a forgotten stash.

Le film raconte l'histoire de ces trois relations avec, en arrière-plan, la vie familiale difficile des Lacasse.
