Born at Wigan, Lancashire, she was a star in many British films of the silent era but is most remembered for her role as Daisy Bunting's mother in The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
She also had bit parts in films such as Jamaica Inn (1939) and Caesar and Cleopatra (1945).
She died in London, England on 9 May 1951.

Lydia Garth meets Paul de Vandiere, a French nobleman, but their romance is plagued by Lydia's complaint of recurring spells of blurred vision. The elderly Morgan-Vaughan sisters Gertrude (Price), Maude (Clare) and Isobel (Merrall) live in a decaying and claustrophobic mansion in a Welsh mining village. Gertrude is blind, Maude almost deaf and Isobel crippled by arthritis. The local coal mine out of which the family made their fortune is almost worked-out and its tunnels and shafts are dangerously unstable. When a section of the underground workings collapses catastrophically, destroying a row of local cottages and unsettling the foundations of the mansion, the sisters feel honour-bound to finance repairs but have no capital with which to do so.

As part of the mass evacuation of children in the early months of World War II, teenage Mary O'Rane is billeted with Mrs Agatha ('Aggie') Voray in an unthreatened area in the north of England. Mary soon discovers that, behind her respectable front, Mrs Voray forces her evacuee charges (five in all) to live in squalor and semi-starvation while spending the money intended for their upkeep on alcohol and personal fripperies. Yet when Mary is visited by her father, Mrs Voray easily convinces him that Mary's allegations are groundless; to Mary's horror, he ends his visit by accompanying Mrs Voray on a pub crawl. Mary's young schoolteacher, Judith Drave, takes her concerns about the children's welfare to the local authorities but is ignored. Mary, meanwhile, is coaxed into petty crime by her fellow evacuee Norma. Matters come to a head when Mrs Voray goes out for the evening and returns to find that her new hat has been damaged. In an alcohol-fuelled fury, she locks little Ronnie in the coal cellar for the night. In the small hours, Mary and Norma sneak out of bed to release him, leading, in an unexpected turn of events, to Mrs Voray's accidental death.

Ivan Kouznetsoff, un inventeur soviétique se rend en Angleterre pour faire bénéficier l'industrie navale britannique de son invention portant sur les hélices. Il y rencontre Anne Tisdall et tombe follement amoureux d'elle. Sa relation avec elle remet en cause sa conception du système capitaliste. Après une querelle d'amoureux, Ivan rentre en URSS, mais il est rappelé en Angleterre un an plus tard pour résoudre quelques problèmes liés à son invention. Malgré ses efforts, ses modifications se révèlent insuffisantes et il risque de devoir retourner dans son pays. Anne convainc les chantiers navals de travailler jour et nuit pour réaliser l'hélice au dessin révolutionnaire. Ils résolvent le problème et c'est le début d'une nouvelle gamme de navires. Ivan peut retourner en Union Soviétique pour y aider à l'effort de guerre, sûr de l'amour d'Anne.
