The story is set in Paris in the middle of the 19th century. Caspar (Totò) and the Baptist (Campanini) are two poor homeless staying in an orphanage, not knowing where to stay. One day the two orphans are called by the director to solve a very special case: Susanne, a girl from the orphanage would like to marry a rich young but her father is against it because he does not know anything about the origins of his girlfriend. So Gasparre has the bright idea to cut a lock of hair to swap it with that of Susanne and so the father of the rich man discovers that the owner of the hair is of noble origins and thus a relative. Caspar along with the Baptist enters the new family but the nobles Parisians have in mind to delete the new emperor Napoleon III of France and the two tramps are involved against their bungling. Being in the real room of the emperor, Napoleon immediately catches them and makes them stop, so Caspar and Baptist are sentenced to the guillotine. But just as the ax is about to fall on their heads, the two orphans wake up with a start: it was all a dream.

In his first story, Totò plays the poor wanderer who meets up with a gentleman in poor economic conditions. The two try to earn a living as best they can, but because of their ineptitude, always end up incurring misfortune and hatred of all. After being kicked out of a beauty salon because he was disguised as a nurse, Totò makes a bet between nobles and later wins a competition and a lot of money after replacing a famous conductor who was sick. Sicile, 1860. Dans l'attente de l'arrivée annoncée du libérateur Giuseppe Garibaldi, les insurgés des campagnes siciliennes subissent la dure répression de l'armée des Bourbons. Le bandit Carmeniddu est envoyé sur le continent par les autres habitants de son village pour rencontrer le colonel Giacinto Carini . Celui-ci avait participé à la révolution sicilienne de 1848 et se trouve à présent avec Garibaldi à Gênes pour demander une intervention dont le retard pourrait être fatal aux rebelles. Il doit donc abandonner sa bien-aimée Gesuzza. En son absence, celle-ci est capturée et risque d'être fusillée, n'ayant qu'un sursis à la suite d'une amnistie royale.
