A notorious killer, long believed to have died in Australia, returns to England seeking revenge for the death of his sister. The "Ringer" threatens to murder the criminal mastermind Maurice Meister. Detective Inspector Alan Wembury is assigned to the case and despite his strong dislike for Meister attempts to protect him with the reluctant assistance of another criminal, Sam Hackett, who has been released from prison as he is the only man able to identify the "Ringer". Even with his help Wembury struggles to unmask their target before the time at which Meister is due to be killed.

Steve Grey, un reporter vedette du New York Daily Star, connu comme "The Murder Man" à cause de son expertise des affaires criminelles, est chargé d'enquêter sur l'assassinat de J. Spencer Halford, un homme d'affaires peu scrupuleux. Il aide la police à mettre en cause Henry Mander, un associé d'Halford. Mais après le procès Steve semble déprimé, et sa collègue et petite amie Mary Shannon lui suggère de prendre un peu de repos. À la campagne, il reçoit la visite de Shorty, un de ses collègues envoyé par le rédacteur en chef pour convaincre Steve d'aller interviewer Mander dans le couloir de la mort. Malgré les objections de Mary, Steve se rend à Sing Sing. Là-bas, il dit en privé à Mander qu'il sait qu'il n'est pas le coupable. De retour au journal, il fait son papier mais mécontent de son travail il le déchire. Il dit à Robins, son rédacteur en chef, qu'il ne peut pas écrire cet article, mais ce dernier lui ordonne de le faire. En colère, Steve promet à Robins une "vraie histoire" et, au lieu d'écrire l'interview, il rédige une confession dans laquelle il reconnaît avoir tué Halford pour venger son père, ruiné par l'homme d'affaires, et sa femme, qui s'est suicidée après avoir été harcelée par Halford. Mary, lorsqu'elle découvre cette confession, cherche à la détruire, mais Steve se rend lui-même au capitaine de la police chargé de l'enquête.

To celebrate their six-month anniversary, Long Island socialites Tony and Carlotta Milburn arrange a wild drinking party with friends, culminating in a stop at the restaurant owned by Faronea. They are unaware that Faronea is conspiring with Baptiste Bouclier, the chauffeur of party host Vic Huling, to kidnap Vic. The next morning the Milburns awake hung over to find Vic dead from a gunshot through the heart and his wife Bette missing. Tony calls his friend, district attorney Danny Harrison to investigate. Bette arrives with Billy Arliss at whose home she had slept. Because of their excessive drinking, no one can remember anything about what had happened the night before. As circumstantial evidence mounts against Tony, he calls in hypnotist Professor Karl Jones to help everyone try to recover their memories. During the tiff, Vance and Doris (Rosalind Russell), Mrs. Llewellyn's secretary, are introduced to each other and Doris immediately takes a liking to Vance.
