This story is based on the life of one Herbert Sarkar, played by Subhasish Mukhopadhyay. Herbert Sarkar, the protagonist of the story is a forty-year-old crank who thinks that he can talk to the dead. Herbert grew up in North Kolkata, feeding on the charity of relatives, and being the butt of local jokes. He declares one day that he has received a message in a dream that has told him where his long dead cousin Binu's diary remains hidden. People are surprised and amused. But when this prediction proves to be true, Herbert becomes a local sensation. He sets up a roaring business called "Dialogues with the Dead" for three years and for the first time in his life, earns money and the respect of others. However, his luck runs out when the international Rationalist Society declares him a fraud and threatens to turn him over to the law unless he closes shop. This deeply affects Herbert and he commits suicide that very night. However, his celebrity power increases to unprecedented levels the day after his death. After his body is put inside the electric cremation chamber, there is a tremendous explosion that rips apart the building, injuring many bystanders. The incident hits the headlines as a posthumous terroristic act, and a high-level police inquiry is launched to find the mystery behind it. The film begins at this point and follows the trajectory of the inquiry, flash-backing into the hidden corners of Herbert's quixotic life into his lonely growing up years as an alienated orphan, his ill-treatment at the hands of his cruel cousin Dhanna, his only tragic-comic love affair, and his unwitting involvement with the underground Maoist Naxalbari movement during the turbulent seventies. It covers several decades not only in the life of its protagonist, but also in the life of Kolkata the city that is at once mysterious, funny, tempestuous, and always full of life.

Un jour, elle montre à son fils, Mahendra (Prasenjit Chatterjee), étudiant en médecine et son ami d'enfance Behari (Tota Roy Chowdhury), la photo de Binodini (Aishwarya Rai), une jeune femme cultivée et éduquée qu'elle connaît depuis l'enfance, pour un éventuel mariage. Les deux hommes refusent. Mahendra se marie avec Ashalata (Raima Sen), que Behari convoitait également, tandis que Binodini se retrouve veuve seulement un an après son mariage. Mahendra, très épris, passe le plus clair de son temps enfermé avec sa femme et commence à délaisser ses études, ce que sa mère voit évidemment d'un mauvais œil. Elle n'apprécie pas vraiment l'épouse de son fils et lui reproche de l'avoir rendu docile et paresseux, allant jusqu'à l'insulter de sorcière.

A criminal gang is set to steal a secret source of energy that emanates from a meteorite that has landed on a remote island. They know that the local tribes have no idea of its value. A patriot, Mr. Talukdar, befriends the tribals. Thirteen-year-old Santu joins his uncle who is sent on behalf of the Intelligence to survey the island. Haridas Choudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle in Mumbai, India, along with his wife, Sonu, son, Guddu, and sister, Geeta. He had started his career as a lowly cobbler on a corner of a busy street, but is now the owner of a shoe company. His associates want him to make shoes that wear out soon, but he refuses to do so, and would like to buy out National Shoes for 20 Lakh Rupees. He withdraws the money, but before he could undertake the transaction, Guddu gets kidnapped, and the demand from his abductors is for 20 Lakhs. Much to his relief he finds out that his servant's son, Bansi, has been mistakenly abducted in place of his son. Nevertheless he decides to pay the ransom, this time with the help of Inspector Amarnath Gill, his sister's estranged boyfriend, who he had turned down as he was not wealthy enough. The money is turned over to the kidnappers, two associates, Manmohan and Preeti, are arrested, Bansi is found and returned to his dad. But the money and the real abductor, Raj Singh, is still at large - and as long as he remains at large none of them can really be safe for he has a grudge to settle against Haridas, and the missing 20 Lakhs may result in the bankruptcy of Haridas' company, they may have to forfeit their family home, and Haridas may well face a jail sentence for embezzling this amount for personal gain. But Inspector catches the thief and returns the money in the end.
