Laxmi Chhaya (January 7, 1948 – May 9, 2004) was an Indian actress and dancer who appeared in more than 55 Bollywood and Marathi films in the 1960s and 1970s, including Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Teesri Manzil, Naunihal (1967), Mere Huzoor (1968) and Duniya. She may be best known in the United States as the masked dancer in the dance segment Jaan Pehechan Ho from the 1965 movie Gumnaam, portions of which were included in the opening credits of the 2001 U.S. film Ghost World.

Chhaya's film career extended from 1961 through at least 1982. After retiring from the cinema, Chhaya taught dancing to indigent children. She died of cancer in Mumbai in 2004 at the age of 56.

A series of mystery burglaries are taking place in the homes of four wealthy men. The burglar takes a single piece of jewelry from each of the men, but not touching the cash and other jewelry, and leaving the calling card of a swastika. The police suspect Tony (Dharmendra), generally known in the community as a thief, but he claims innocence. He tries to find out who the real burglar is and catches Sandhya (Tanuja) stealing from one of the wealthy men. She tells him that she is taking back what is really her inheritance, as these items belong to her mother (played by Tanuja's real-life mother Shobhana Samarth), since these four men swindled her mother after her father's death. Her mother is now in a mental institution. Tony and Sandhya fall in love. He helps her recover all of her items and put the wealthy men behind bars. Sandhya's mother is well again. Tony and Sandhya promise to start a life together after they finish their respective short jail stints.

Shyam (Shashi Kapoor) was a son of Ramu kaka who works in the palace of Kuwar Amar Singh (Ajit Khan). Amar Singh considers him as his own brother and gets him good education. Shyam meets with Renu (Vimi) on a train while going to Dehradun and immediately gets attracted to her. As she finds her purse in his coat, she misunderstands him for a thief. Later it is known to her that Kuldeep (Rajendra Nath) who was a petty thief, has stolen her purse and kept in Shyam's coat. She apologize him and they grow close. Meanwhile it is revealed that Kuldeep was the lost cousin of Renu and they reconcile. Amar Singh asks Chandan Singh's sister's hand for Shyam for which Chandan Singh feels insulted as Shyam was servant's son and rivalry grows between them.

Amitabh plays Kumar Sen, an artist by profession. He is in love with Asha (Yogeeta Bali). Asha wins a trip to Ooty in a dance competition, and falls in love with a wealthy tea plantation owner, Rajesh (Navin Nischol). When Kumar finds out, he goes to Asha's uncle, Ashok Verma (Om Prakash), and demands Asha's hand in marriage. When Ashok refuses, Kumar kills him. The manner in which Kumar plans and executes the murder is regarded as an immensely brilliant and engaging sequence. Kumar boards and exits, various modes of transportation to avoid any possibilities of suspicion and finally frames Rajesh in the case and tries to win Asha's love. Asha, still in love with Rajesh, promises Kumar to stay with him forever, if he can get Rajesh released from his death sentence. Unable to digest that, Kumar understands that Rajesh will always remain Asha's love. He writes down his confession, gives it to Rajesh, and commits suicide.
