The film revolved around women of three generations and their lives and changing position in society. And this is shown in relation to a jewellery box. The lead character is the matriarch of a Bengali Hindu family (Moushumi Chatterjee) of landed gentry in East Bengal. She was married off in an arranged marriage at age 11, and widowed shortly thereafter. The story of the film revolves around her wedding jewels, which she keeps sequestered in a box. After becoming a victim of ethnic cleansing during the partition of India, her family moves to the Republic of India from East Pakistan, losing their ancestral lands in the process. She spends the remainder of her life, apparently as a chaste widow, hiding her wedding jewels from her greedy relatives in the joint family. In 1949, she befriends the new bride of the family, her niece-in-law (Konkona Sen Sharma) shortly before dying.

Sunny told Kaberi that he had a dream to become an actor. Kaberi was impressed with her would be son in law. Kaberi started helping Sunny so that he can become an actor in future. As time passed, Sunny & Kaberi both get to know each other more. Age difference between Ritu and Kaberi was not very high. Sisir Roy (Soumitra Chatterjee) is a 72-year-old man, long retired from a government office as Upper Division Clerk. Biswanath (Rahul) is a typist who sits on one side of the park, quite aware of that the number of customers is rapidly dwindling, as more and more people prefer electronic type using computers, but he does not have the means to buy a computer. Reena (Nina Chakrabarty) is a young girl, working at a petrol pump,who is struggling against an uncertain future and insecurity. All these five people are either going through or on the verge of a crisis in their lives. In midst of such a situation, Sisir’s son and daughter-in-law leave for Meerut. And now Sisir is left completely alone. Detached from his own kin, Sisir now reaches out to his extended family by involving himself more intimately with the four new people in his life. He touches upon their minds trying to change their thoughts, and in turn, their lives. But in the process, he puts his own life into a vortex of complexities.

AnjaniPutra Sensharma (Prosenjit Chatterjee) is a school teacher in a small village named Basirhat in West Bengal. He lives with his wife Tanushree (Mousumi Bhattacharya) and his old moped. On the computer, he makes a friend named Maria Fischer (Saskia Ranwig) who claims to be from Reykjavik in Iceland. When AnjaniPutra witnesses her yo be murdered by a masked man on webcam, he succumbs to a psychological shock. Determined to find out her murderer he takes a flight to Iceland selling his ancestral land. Soon being befuddled in a foreign country he finds rescue in the Bangladeshi family of Hassan (Gaurav Pandey) settled there. A father-daughter like relation grows up between AnjaniPutra and Hassan's daughter Nuri (Saloni Pandey). Eventually, he finds out that the address given by Maria is false. Nonetheless, Nuri hacks into Maria's computer and finds out that her murderer is actually the local mayor (Oli Bigalke) who moonlights as a sociopathic rapist. Nuri sends him several emails tricking him to believe that Maria is actually alive. Then she steals a gun from her father's closet and persuades AnjaniPutra to confront the murderer. Although initially frightened and reluctant, AnjaniPutra finally guns the murderer down when he attempts to assault a decoy of Maria. Maria's dead body is soon found in a lake in Munich, Germany and AnjaniPutra becomes headline in several international newspaper. Finally AnjaniPutra returns home to a tearful Tanushree and the film concludes.
