Madhava Menon (Nedumudi Venu) is a well respected retired police officer who has two daughters, Meera (Meghana Raj) and Meena (Lakshmi Sharma). Narasimhan. IPS (Sarath Kumar), an efficient police officer in Tamil Nadu, married Meera and Nandagopan (Jagadish), an officer in Kerala Police who does homework more efficiently than his official work married Meena. They all live very happily. The state legislative election is announced in the state. There happens a twist in Madhava Menon's life. The leader of a political party digs out an old case (a police custody death of a teenage boy) in order to trap another leader in the opposition party. The case begins to draw big attention and the press comes to Madhava Menon's house to ask him about the case because he was in charge of the police station when the boy died. He tells the media that he killed the boy. It was a surprise to his daughters and sons-in-law. Soon he is arrested and put into the jail. Narasimhan and Nandagopan joins hand and search for the truth because they are sure that their father-in-law did not do such a thing. Also, they doubt that he agreed to have committed the crime to save some one else. Through a series of investigations, Narasimhan and Nandagopan finds the original culprit and proves the innocence of Madhava Menon.

The hidden secrets of an attempted murder are revealed through portrayal of circumstances that three different girls pass through in their life. Aswathy, a textiles shop employee, is staying with her bedridden and sick mother. She looks after the family with her meager salary. Kartika is a girl who is bestowed upon lots of love and affection by her parents. Her life zooms into a crisis when she comes to know of the secrets of her father’s profession. The third girl, Rohini, lives in luxury and has tremendously rich parents. But the uneasiness and unhappiness in the family atmosphere makes her very very sad. She elopes with her very poor lover. Her father engages hired hoodlums to get her back after beating up the lover. She decides to commit suicide. Aswathy ‘s mother comes in search of Indusekharan, Rohini’s father. Aswathy is actually an illegitimate daughter of Indusekharan. But Indusekharan decides to get Aswathy murdered. The person whom he engages to do this murder is Kartika’s father. He comes towards Aswathy as the messenger of death.

Pakal takes us into the world of farmers, of the high ranges of Wayanad District of Kerala, who are forced to commit suicide following financial problems. The story has a lot of potential with a relevant political issue and there are some political comments too—like hints at the failure of the government machinery and religious institutions, which ought to come to the aid of the peasants. The film opens with the protagonist Nandakumar (Prithviraj), who is a reporter of the television channel Kerala Today, being sent to Pannakamkudi to do a regular series on the plight of the farmers of the area. He alights on the mission with his cameraman Abu (Sudheesh) to the high ranges, delivering daily reports in the prime time news about the crop failure, low prices for agricultural products, inability to repay loans issued by banks and cut-throat interest rates charged by private financiers, which eventually force the peasants to commit mass suicides.
