Jan Aleksander Englert, né à Varsovie le 11 mai 1943 , est un acteur polonais de théâtre et de cinéma, metteur en scène, scénariste et réalisateur, professeur à l'Académie de théâtre Alexandre Zelwerowicz, dont il a été le recteur de 1987 à 1993 et de 1996 à 2002.

Il a joué dans plus de 60 films depuis 1957. Il est directeur artistique du Théâtre national de Varsovie depuis 2003.

Biographie

Après des études achevées en 1964 à l'École nationale supérieure de théâtre de Varsovie (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Teatralna, PWST), il commence une longue carrière d'acteur et de metteur en scène. Il avait fait ses débuts à 13 ans avec le rôle du messager Zefir dans le film d'Andrzej Wajda Ils aimaient la vie (Kanał) tourné en 1956.

Il joue dans la troupe de plusieurs théâtres de Varsovie :


Teatr Współczesny (1964-1981),
Théâtre Polski (1981-1994),
Théâtre national (depuis 1997), dont il est directeur artistique depuis 2003
Il enseigne à l'École nationale supérieure de théâtre de Varsovie (qui devient l'Académie de théâtre Alexandre Zelwerowicz), où il occupe successivement les fonctions de doyen de la faculté d'acteurs (1981-1987), puis recteur (1987-1993 et 1996-2002). Il a le titre universitaire de professeur depuis 1989. Il est très connu pour sa participation

Il est membre du Conseil de la culture auprès du président de la République de Pologne Lech Wałęsa de 1992 à 1993.

Le film nous présente le massacre de Katyń du point de vue des vivants, c'est-à-dire du point de vue des épouses et des mères qui ont attendu des années avant de savoir ce qu'étaient devenus les officiers polonais arrêtés par l'armée soviétique en 1940. Il s'arrête aussi sur l'après-guerre, montrant l'entreprise de falsification de l'histoire menée par le pouvoir communiste et les tentatives de certains proches des victimes pour défendre la vérité. Ce n'est que dans la dernière scène que Wajda met un terme à toutes altérations de l'histoire en montrant les assassinats du point de vue des victimes.

The time flies and Jurek Kiler has already forgotten the fact that he used to work as a taxi driver and that he was suspected of series of murders. In the year 1900 the German Emperor, Wilhelm II, was invited for a bison hunt in the hunting lodge and estate of a wealthy industrialist and businessman Prince Hans Heinrich XV (of the von Teuss family) in German-controlled Silesia. The emperor, satisfied with the diplomatic services of the Prince for the country and charmed by his young wife Daisy, offers him a profitable position. The Prince is obliged to choose: either become the Great Huntsman of the Crown and receive additional land for building new factories, coal mines and manufacturing plants or become an Ambassador of the German Empire in London. Although under the constant pressure of his wife to choose the position of an ambassador, Hans Heinrich decides to choose the position of the Great Huntsman of the Empire. Later distressed Princess Daisy turns to the Emperor for help in order to escape from her tyrannical, cynical and obsessed husband. Upon the Kaiser's refusal she becomes involved in a scandalous affair that would later have devastating consequences on the von Teuss family and her marriage. The Prince eventually divorced Daisy in the 1920s.

Nights and Days is a family saga of Barbara Ostrzeńska-Niechcic, (played by Jadwiga Barańska) and Bogumił Niechcic, (played by Jerzy Bińczycki) against the backdrop of the January Uprising of 1863 and World War I. The film is a rather straightforward and faithful adaptation of a novel by Maria Dąbrowska with the same title. The plot is woven around the changing fortunes of a noble (upper-class) Niechcic family in the pre-WWI Poland. There are two main crossing threads: a social history one and an existential one. The cinematographic version is a condensation of the 12 part award winning TV serial of the same title and using the same cast and producers.
