Harini is an Indian film playback singer and classical singer, who sings mainly in Tamil films. She has also sung in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada language films, whilst working with many leading film composers. She is married to another playback singer Tippu.
Harini learnt Carnatic music from Gowri and Radha Viswanathan from the age of four. In her later years, she learned from Sudha Raghunathan and currently from Suguna Purushotthaman. She used to participate in school competitions and in one such competition which she won, A. R. Rahman who distributed the prizes invited the winners to his studio to record their voices. Subsequently, she was called by Suhasini Maniratnam to sing "Nila Kaigirathu" for her first film Indira. Her very first song, "Nila Kaigirathu", was recorded at the age of 13. Since then, she has received offers from various music directors across South India. Within a career spanning for a decade, she sang over 2000 film songs and several album songs, most of them in Tamil. She is also credited for her good memory skills for not having any reference while singing in her stage shows. She claims to have known all her songs by heart at any point in time.

Unusually, this is not a film dominated by a male protagonist. Instead, it chooses to revolve around the life of Sala (short for Visalatchi) played by Sneha, who when the film begins is about to complete her master's degree. Though she is the only daughter of her parents, she always enjoys the company of people. While attending a relative's marriage, Sala happens to see Natesan played by Cheran who too attends the function along with all his family members, who live together as a big joint family. Both the family meet and arrange the marriage of Sala and Natesan. Jayachandran (Simbu) is an orphan working in a hotel as a helper. It is assumed he gets his title name "Thotti Jaya" as he is found in a garbage bin as an infant. One day he beats and fends off a man who gets into a squbble with the hotel owner. The following night the hotel owner rewards him with cash and dreads him the next morning. He realizes people only respect people they fear. So he walks out from the hotel and reaches chennai. He is spotted by Seena Thana (Pradeep Rawat) and hired as a hench man.In an incident, Jaya gets entangled in a political and police trap. To escape from police, Jaya slips to Calcutta and goes into hiding. Meanwhile, Brinda (Gopika), a college lass from Kanyakumari comes to Calcutta on a tour along with her friends. Pimps operating in the red light area of Calcutta take away Brinda. Jaya accidentally meets Brinda when she tries to escape from the gang. He helps Brinda escape from the gang and takes her safely to Kanyakumari. On her way back home by train, Brinda starts admiring Jaya's niceties and gradually falls in love with him. When she expresses her desire, Jaya reciprocates her love, and both decide to enter into wedlock but little does he know that Brindha is actually the daughter of Seena Thana. Jaya takes away Brinda from her house and thus, earns the wrath of Seena Thana. Angered by this, Seena Thana summons his rowdy gangs and plots to bump off Thotti Jaya. How Thottijaya accomplishes his hopes of marrying Brinda is told in the remaining part of the story.

The movie opens in an engineering college in Ooty with a narration of the characters. Rajiv Samuel (Abbas) is a computer engineering student and is one of the top students in the college, whereas Rajesh (R. Madhavan) is a mechanical engineering student who is the bad guy of the college. A mutual problem between the two groups led by both Samuel and Rajesh puts both Sam and Rajesh at loggerheads and they pull pranks on each other to get the other in trouble. It culminates into a fist fight but is soon broken up their friends. In the fight, Rajesh punches Sam in the face, which is against the rule, and Sam promises to return the favor in future. They graduate from the college soon and promise to not see each other ever again. Sam goes abroad for job, while Rajesh stays back in India saying that he does not want to leave his motherland.
