Mary, enceinte et abandonnée par les siens, est conseillée par une nonne de la soupe populaire qui lui donne l'adresse d'un refuge pour jeune fille en difficultés, qui est tenu par des nonnes. Elle s'y rend et se rend vite compte qu'elle se retrouve dans un univers quasi carcéral où règne une discipline de fer et où chaque manquement à la discipline est châtié avec sadisme. Elle apprend par la suite que les bébés naissant dans le refuge sont revendus a des couples de bourgeois. Toutes les tentatives d'évasion de Mary échouent jusqu'au jour...

Carmilla arrives in South Carolina to investigate a woman named Millarca. The only information she has is an address, but Troy, the owner of the house, says nobody named Millarca has ever lived there. He offers to give Carmilla a ride into town, and she later coincidentally visits a restaurant where Troy's daughter, Laura, works. Curious, Laura presses for more details, and Carmilla reveals that Millarca is her mother, whom she never knew. Carmilla eventually becomes annoyed with Laura's questions and leaves, but Laura stops her to explain that her father once rented out a trailer. Carmilla requests public records at the police station, but they tell her it will take two business days.

Billy, a fetish photographer who specializes in staged depictions of dead women, becomes involved in a murder mystery when one of his models turns up dead for real. Michael Bamfeaux, a depressed police detective, investigates the crime and probes Billy as to why he chooses to involve himself in the world of exploitation and fetish. Billy can not explain why he does what he does, except that he accepts that he is attracted to certain ideas and women. As the two men become friendlier, Michael becomes more involved in Billy's photoshoots. When Alex, Billy's girlfriend, is attacked by a jealous model with whom Billy and Alex had a threesome, Michael shoots and kills Alex's attacker. Michael later attempts to sell his memoirs, but a literary agent suggests that the story's loose ends and weak protagonist are not a good sell.
