Mark Conrad fut autrefois un flamboyant aventurier. Aujourd'hui, sombré dans l'alcoolisme, il passe son temps à déclencher des bagarres sur le port de Hong Kong et à se faire arrêter par les autorités locales. Il se retrouve alors à bord du ferry commandé par le capitaine Hart. Immédiatement, une mésentente se crée entre les deux hommes. Ses visas étant réfutés, il ne peut plus débarquer ni à Hong Kong ni à Macao et se retrouve donc coincé sur le ferry. Réputé pour son don d'humilier ses semblables, Hart en fait profiter Conrad qui lui retrouve goût à la vie auprès de la jolie Liz. Un typhon puis une attaque de pirates démontrent cependant l'inefficacité de Hart et le courage de Conrad, ce dernier retrouvant dès lors sa dignité.

Johnny (Slater) is a long-distance lorry driver returning to London from a provincial delivery, after having taken in a show by Joan Rhodes on the way. Late at night he stops to give a lift to an attractive female hitchhiker whose car has broken down and who is in a hurry to get to back to London. Later, Johnny pulls in to a transport café to make a telephone call and buy a coffee. When he returns to his truck, the woman is gone. Assuming that in her hurry she has picked up a lift with another driver, he goes on his way, and a few miles down the road is flagged down by another driver to help with a woman who has been found laid at the roadside. It turns out that the woman is Johnny's hitchhiker, and that she is dead.

After serving a term in prison for safe-cracking, Fred Morris finds work as a Taxicab driver. He is approached by a gang that recruits ex-cons, but, wishing to go straight, he informs the police and they send him undercover to join the gang and expose its leader. But the gang discovers Morris's identity and tries to kill him by locking him in a deep freezer. He is saved by his cabby friends who ride to the rescue and corner the crooks.

L'histoire tourne autour de trois jeunes gens : le sergent britannique Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price), le sergent américain Bob Johnson (interprété par un véritable sergent, du nom de John Sweet), et une land girl, Miss Alison Smith (Sheila Sim). Très tard un vendredi, le groupe arrive sur le quai de gare d'une petite ville fictive du Kent, du nom de Chillingbourne, près de Canterbury. Peter est stationné dans un camp militaire proche, Alison doit commencer un travail dans une ferme de la région, quant à Bob il est descendu du train par erreur, en entendant l'annonce « Canterbury prochain arrêt » et en pensant qu'il était arrivé à Canterbury. Au moment où tous les trois quittent la gare, Alison est attaquée par un mystérieux homme en uniforme qui, avant de prendre la fuite, lui répand de la colle dans les cheveux. Il apparait que l'incident s'est produit quelques fois déjà auparavant. Alison demande à Bob s'il peut rester à Chillingbourne durant le week-end pour l'aider à résoudre le mystère. Le lendemain, tandis qu'elle conduit un chariot dans les champs, Alison rencontre Peter qui fait escorter le chariot par trois chenillettes. Alison accepte de revoir Peter.
