Lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, Paul Bäumer et ses amis de classe d'un lycée allemand se décident à s'enrôler volontairement pour répondre aux harangues patriotiques de leur professeur qui les exhorte à défendre la patrie et à se couvrir de gloire. Les uns enthousiastes, les autres ne voulant pas se singulariser. Bien vite, les adolescents se rendent compte qu'il n'y a pas que des bons côtés à la guerre : discipline absurde, désorganisation du front, sous-alimentation, attente insupportable sous les bombardements meurtriers, combats cruels, pertes énormes. Les médecins manquent et les blessés, s'ajoutant aux morts, finissent par mourir.

New York theatrical producer Larry O'Brien (Conte) plans to found a motion picture company in Hollywood. He buys an old studio which was unused since the days of silent movies. There he's shown the office where a famous director was murdered twenty years earlier. Although there were many suspects the case hasn't been solved. O'Brian becomes fascinated by the subject and decides to make a film based on the case. To this end he begins interviewing the surviving participants and soon gets into danger himself. In the end it turns out that the murderer is the victim's jealous brother.

The movie begins with Georgia Drake (Kay Francis) performing on the stage, singing "Gypsy Lullaby" while her daughter, Pamela (Deanna Durbin), watches with her boyfriend Freddie Miller (Lewis Howard). Georgia is an older Broadway actress who was once very famous. Her daughter, Pam, also has great acting skills and hopes to be a successful actress as well. At an after-party celebrating the closing of a play that Georgia was in, Pamela convinces director Sidney Simpson (Samuel S. Hinds) and writer Carl Ober (S.Z. Sakall) to attend one of the plays she is in. After the party ends, Pamela sings "Love is All" with the maid, Sara (Cecilia Loftus), playing piano and her mother listening.

The film opens with Francie "Gidget" Lawrence (Deborah Walley) and Jeff "Moondoggie" Matthews (James Darren) getting pinned. Later, Gidget's father Russ (Carl Reiner) announces that they are going to Hawaii for a vacation. Gidget refuses to go and leave Jeff alone; Gidget's mother Dorothy (Jean Donnell) explains to Russ that Jeff is all that matters to Gidget. Russ decides to cancel Gidget's room reservation and make arrangements for her to stay with a relative so that she can be with Jeff. However, when Jeff tells Gidget that he thinks it's great and that she should go to Hawaii, Gidget gives him back his pin, runs home and tells her folks she has changed her mind.

Stan, en compagnie de son conseiller financier Oliver, fait un héritage comprenant une belle somme d'argent ainsi qu'un navire de plaisance et une île aux antipodes. Mais après qu’ont été payés les droits de succession, frais de notaires et autres taxes, l'argent a quasiment entièrement fondu ; il ne leur reste que le yacht et l'île. Ils s'embarquent alors à bord du yacht pour rejoindre leur île en compagnie d'un cuistot, apatride sans papiers qui ne parvient jamais à trouver un pays d'asile, et un passager clandestin, italien sans ressources qui ne parvient jamais à embarquer sur un bateau pour quitter la France. En cours de route, ils s'échouent sur un atoll volcanique qui surgit de la mer sur le trajet de leur bateau. Les quatre héros jouent alors les Robinson Crusoe sur cette île inconnue du monde entier. Parallèlement, une chanteuse de cabaret de Tahiti, Chérie Lamour, qui s'est disputée avec son amoureux, officier de marine, quitte le bateau sur lequel elle avait embarqué et se fait débarquer sur l'île de nos héros. Puis son amoureux la retrouve et annonce à ses propriétaires que l'île regorge d'uranium. La nouvelle fait vite le tour du monde, c'est la ruée vers l'uranium et le paradis de nos quatre héros ne tarde pas à être envahi. Le gouvernement qu'ils avaient formé, exempt de lois, d'argent, et de taxes, ne résiste pas à des menées sournoises ni à une révolution pétaradante menée par un méchant avide d'argent et de pouvoir. Au moment où nos quatre héros vont être pendus par les nouveaux dirigeants de l'île, celle-ci subit un nouveau cataclysme géologique et disparaît aussi vite qu'elle était apparue. Nos quatre héros et Chérie sont recueillis par un navire qui conduit alors Stan et Oliver sur l'île héritée par Stan. Là ils se croient être enfin seuls et tranquilles quand un fonctionnaire vient leur annoncer qu'ils ont encore des droits de succession à payer en tant que nouveaux propriétaires de l'île.
