Year 1808. The young Gabriel Araceli (Quim Gutierrez) is working as a typesetter in a modest printing of Madrid. His girlfriend, Ines (Paula Echevarria), is a pretty orphan girl living in Aranjuez, hosted by his uncle, the evil Don Celestino Santos (Manuel Galiana). During his visit to the Royal Site to see the bride, Gabriel coincides with the historic uprising of 19 March against Godoy, whose palace is assaulted by the mob. Thinking about the girl's sake, Don Celestino consent to Inez moved to Madrid to live with their relatives also Don Mauro Requejo and sister Restituta. Gabriel, to be near his girlfriend, in response to a notice is provided as a waiter in the shop. With the help of the boy John of God, who is in love with the girl, tries to kidnap Agnes, for Don Mauro seeks nothing less than to marry her himself. Javi, Manu, and Rai are friends from school. They are teenagers, and they talk about girls a lot but seldom talk with them. They live together in the barrio (neighbourhood). La quête du royaume mythique de l'Eldorado obsède les conquérants espagnols. Le film de Carlos Saura s'ouvre sur une scène s'inspirant d'un récit effectué par Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo. Les conquistadores de Quito avaient entendu raconter, en 1534, qu'une tribu indienne des hautes terres de Cundinamarca (dans l'actuelle Colombie) célébrait annuellement une cérémonie durant laquelle un cacique au corps recouvert de poudre d'or se baignait dans les eaux d'un lac sacré et y engloutissait, en offrande aux dieux, des objets d'or et d'argent. Cette séquence revêt la forme d'un songe cherchant à expliquer l'organisation d'une grande expédition fluviale de découverte et de conquête des territoires d'Omagua et d'Eldorado par la Couronne d'Espagne, à partir de 1559. Le 26 septembre 1560, le commandant de la flotte, Pedro de Ursúa lève l'ancre en compagnie de plusieurs centaines d'hommes de toutes origines et conditions. À ses côtés, en tant qu'adjoint, on retrouve Lope de Aguirre, un conquistador violent et cruel. L'expédition se révèlera, au bout d'une année, extrêmement éprouvante et guère probante. L'atmosphère de la jungle, les maladies et l'attitude hostile des indigènes freinent la progression de l'expédition. En outre, des rivalités internes finissent par décimer les troupes. Aguirre, obstiné et ambitieux, fomente alors une rébellion au cours de laquelle Pedro de Ursua est assassiné. Don Fernando de Guzmán est institué chef de l'expédition. En mars 1561, après avoir assassiné Guzmán, ses partisans, et Dona Ines, maitresse de Ursua, Aguirre se fait lui-même proclamer "Prince du Pérou, de la Terre Ferme et du Chili", rejetant officiellement l'autorité du roi d'Espagne. Miné par la fièvre, Aguirre continue l'expédition avec ses derniers partisans, les marañones, sans grand espoir d'atteindre Eldorado.

The story is set in Madrid in the late 1940s early 1950s during the first years of Franco’s regime. Pedro Martín, a young ambitious doctor, is studying the effect of cancerous cells on mice, but he has run out of mice in his laboratory, since they do not breed there, and he has no funds to purchase more of these expensive laboratory animals from the United States. Nevertheless, his assistant, Amador, informs him that he gave some of the mice to an old trapper, nicknamed "el Muecas", who lives in precarious conditions in a shanty town outside Madrid, and that this poor man has successfully bred them with the help of the natural heat of his daughters. The incredulous scientist goes to the shanty town to obtain the mice. There, Pedro meets Muecas, Muecas's wife Ricarda and their two daughters Florita and Conchi. With the warmth of the women’s breasts, as the flirtatious Florita shows Pedro, the mice are able to reproduce.
