The film opens with three gangsters cornering Santo (Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta) in a deserted alley and knock him out. He is taken to the laboratory of a crazed Doctor Campos (Joaquín Cordero) and turned into a docile servant of the mad doctor through a series of injections and electric shocks. Campos is apparently a respected scientist, the friend of Lieutenant Zambrano. Zambrano warns him to beware: other scientists have recently been kidnapped. Almost as they speak, the gangsters and the brainwashed Santo assault the bodyguards of a Doctor Lowel and carry off the scientist. He is later given the brainwashing treatment at Campos' lab. The bodyguards tell Zambrano that Santo, an undercover agent for the police force, was one of the kidnapers. Meanwhile, another undercover agent, El Incógnito (Fernando Osés) uses a special device to locate the hideout of Doctor Campos.

Une journaliste questionne un artiste sur le portrait d'une jolie indienne dénudée dont il n'a jamais voulu parler. L'artiste peintre lui raconte alors l'histoire de Maria Candelaria (Dolores del Rio), une jeune indienne native de Xochimilco qui vit alors au début du XXème siècle. La jeune femme est reniée par les siens car elle est la fille d'une prostituée. Le seul qui ose rester avec elle se nomme Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendariz), un jeune indien qui lui est dévoué. Cependant, l'amour des deux protagonistes est soumis aux jeux capricieux du destin.
