Duke York (October 17, 1908 – January 24, 1952) was an American film actor and stuntman. Born in Danby, New York, York was born Charles Everest Sinsabaugh. He appeared in nearly 160 films between 1932 and 1952.

Biographie

Duke York a tall actor at 7'0 in his private life however, was quite unlucky in love. He married in the 1930s to a movie stunt woman, Frances Miles, but the union was ended by divorce in 1941. Several years later, York was dating a Beverly Hills brunette named Catherine Moench. They planned to marry, but she called it off, saying that he was "quite jealous and had misunderstood various actions" of hers in the past. York eventually admitted to Moench that he was wrong, and wanted to get back together, but she didn't want to.

The Stooges work for Miracle Detective Agency, and are hired by a middle-aged millionaire named John Goodrich (Emil Sitka) to track down some racketeers who have threatened his life. Upon arrival at Old Man Goodrich's mansion, the boys are quickly seduced by a beautiful blonde (Christine McIntyre) who puts a dose of poison in Shemp's drink. Moe and Larry revive Shemp and a spectacular chase ensues, culminating in a lights-out fight, with the Stooges coming out on top.

The Stooges are mistaken for three armored car thieves after getting caught in crossfire. Captain Mullin (Vernon Dent) gives the boys a lie detector test, but finds no reason to hold them. He releases them, and they return to work at their restaurant, the Elite Café. Friend Gladys Harmon (Christine McIntyre) stops by the restaurant just as one of the real armored car bandits flees the scene. They then chase the bandit to a spooky old mansion where they and their hideous hatchet man, Angel (Duke York), are hiding. When the mob abducts Gladys, the Stooges come to her rescue and retrieve the stolen money.

C'est l'histoire authentique de David Marshall Williams, surnommé "Carbine Williams" qui, au début des années 1920, tue accidentellement un policier venu l'arrêter parce qu'il distillait clandestinement de l'alcool. Emprisonné, il parvient à créer, dans l'atelier où il est affecté, un prototype de carabine révolutionnaire. Sa famille (dont sa femme Maggie) obtient des autorités une réduction de peine et finalement une libération anticipée. La firme Winchester embauche alors Williams et commercialise l'invention sous le nom de Carabine M1. Un jour, son jeune fils lui posant des questions sur son passé, Williams lui fait rencontrer l'ancien directeur de sa prison, le capitaine Peoples, lequel raconte à l'enfant l'histoire de son père (le film débute là et se poursuit avec un long flashback).

The Stooges are private eyes at the Alert Detective Agency who are called upon by the wealthy Mr. Goodrich (Emil Sitka). Goodrich reports that the Phantom Gang, of which his own niece (Christine McIntyre) is a member, has been murdering socialites, with Goodrich as their next target. By the time the Stooges arrive, Goodrich is out cold and locked away, with the butler (Charles Knight) (also a member of the Phantom Gang) greeting the trio. Goodrich's niece flirts with Shemp, ultimately trying to poison him. Finally, a towering goon named Nikko (Duke York) chases the Stooges from room to room. After Shemp knocks Nikko cold, he literally bumps into an unconscious Goodrich, who spills the Phantom Gang's plot. A fight then ensues with the lights out, and the Stooges ultimately get the baddies.
