Bob Harris, acteur américain prenant de l'âge et à la carrière instable, arrive à Tokyo au Japon, afin d’y tourner une publicité pour un whisky de la marque Suntory, contrat qu'il a accepté en partie pour l'argent et en partie pour fuir son épouse. Incapable de s’adapter au décalage horaire et à la situation présente, il passe le plus clair de son temps dans l'hôtel de luxe où il réside, un gratte-ciel dominant la ville. Pendant ce temps, Charlotte, une jeune femme récemment diplômée de l'université venue à Tokyo afin d’y accompagner John, son mari, un photographe de célébrités, s’ennuie et se sent seule, incertaine à propos de son avenir et de ses sentiments envers l'homme qu'elle a épousé. John se consacre en effet entièrement à son travail, délaissant Charlotte au profit des célébrités qu'il côtoie, comme Kelly, une actrice.

Rannosuke Kazamatsuri, un ronin redoutable, vient de voler le sabre ornemental offert par le shogun au clan Nagashima qu'il était pourtant supposé garder. Le premier vassal du clan, Hanzen Inukai, envoie un homme récupérer le sabre. Son fils, Hensei Inukai, récemment revenu d'Ido où il a appris le maniement du sabre et désireux de montrer ses talents, décide de partir aussi à la recherche du sabre. Il est accompagné par ses deux amis d'enfance : Tadasuke Kurosawa et Shintaro Suzuki. Hanzen, qui n'a aucune confiance dans l'habileté de son fils, envoie alors deux ninjas sur ses traces.

Sawaki (Shin'ichi Tsutsumi) is a postman. He has an old friend Noguchi (Keisuke Horibe) who, unknown to him, had become a yakuza. Noguchi was being spied by the police for a long time. One day Sawaki delivers a letter to him and stays at his place for a while. During his stay Noguchi puts a package of drugs into Sawaki's letter bag. His finger, which he cut off as a symbol of loyalty to his gang, also accidentally falls into the bag. Viewing his relationship with Noguchi, the police think that Sawaki is a member of the yakuza and follow him. On reaching home, Sawaki finds a suicide note in his bag written by a cancer patient to her aunt. He rushes to the hospital to see the girl Kyoko (Kyoko Toyama) and falls in love with her. He meets a hit man Joe (Ren Osugi) there who tells him how he had won the contract killing competition called the "Killer of killers". The police profiler (Tomoro Taguchi), who was following Sawaki, comes to the conclusion that Sawaki is a member of the criminal gang. Meanwhile, Naguchi discovers that the finger he had cut was no longer in his house. All this marked the beginning of problems for Sawaki.

This is the story of a girl named Wendy Reed, who leaves the USA and her boyfriend, a musician played by Michael Cerveris, and travels to Tokyo, Japan. She plans to visit a girlfriend but cannot find her. Instead she meets a young man named Hiro (pronounced hero), who is the leader of an unsuccessful pop band. As Wendy is blonde and tall by local standards, she attracts attention. She falls in love with Hiro and develops a music career as the movie advances. With some tricks they manage to catch the eye of a record label producer and achieve success for a short time. The song, which is played throughout, is a cover version from John Sebastian's Do you believe in magic? While they top the charts, there is some luxury in their lives, but the blossoming relationship of the main couple starts breaking apart.
