Après avoir abandonné ses études à Chicago, Doug retrouve le climat pluvieux de Portland en Oregon. Sans but et indécis quant à son avenir, il vit chez sa sœur Gail, une femme stable et responsable, et passe ses journées à dormir et relire de vieux romans policiers. Finalement, il trouve un poste dans l’équipe de nuit d’une usine de glace où il fait la rencontre de Carlos dont il devient l’ami après lui avoir prêté un exemplaire des Aventures de Sherlock Holmes, son livre préféré. Doug se fait à peine à sa nouvelle vie que Rachel, son ancienne petite amie de Chicago, arrive en ville. Il se méfie d’elle, mais la présente à Carlos et à Gail.
