International spy, Dr. Karl Graves, was arrested in Lima, Ohio, where he traveled after watching Mayo perform at the Empire Theater in New York City. Graves authored Revelations of the Kaiser's Personal Spy. Mayo was in Lima with her manager, Phil Selznik, when Graves was apprehended, stopping first in Bucyrus, Ohio, when she left New York.
Portsmouth, Ohio was one of the thirty American cities Mayo toured in 1917. After the screening of one of her feature films, she discussed her movie career with the audience. A reception was held in the lobby of the Columbia Theater in Portsmouth. Aside from promoting movies, Mayo utilized her tour to recruit troops for service in World War I and to sell Liberty Bonds. She was assigned to the recruiting department of the U.S. Navy. She received a solid gold medal representing the American flag from the hospital corps in recognition of her service to the government. Mayo was one of the first women of the stage to be awarded the right to wear the button of the Liberty Legion.
Mayo plays the scatterbrained Mrs. Chadwick in The Hottentot (1921). One reviewer
complimented her acting as a bright characterization. In The Shock (1923), starring
Lon Chaney, Mayo was compared to Mary Alden in her rendition of Ann Cardington, queen of the underworld. She was in the supporting cast of Don't Marry For Money (1923) along with
Edith Yorke and Charles Wellesley.
Mayo appeared with some of the most popular actors of her era. She made For Sale (1924) with Adolphe Menjou, Tully Marshall, and Vera Reynolds. The New York Times reviewed the movie unfavorably, comparing it to a discarded Daisy Ashford effort. The heroine resides in a mansion of Louvre-like dimensions. When her father loses his wealth entirely, he comes up with the idea of having his daughter, Claire Windsor, marry a profligate, a rich one.
Mayo was in the troupe of the Wilkes Stock Company in April 1929 at the Majestic Theater in Los Angeles, California. She joined Edward Everett Horton in a stage production of The Hottentot.
Mayo enjoyed cooking chicken-a-la-king, interior decorating, and reading classic novels by Balzac and Alexandre Dumas.

As described in an adoption published in the film magazine Shadowland, Billy Bartlett (Pallette) suspects his wife Laura (Mayo), who has been spending time with Philip Evans (Buckley), is having an affair. When upstairs neighbors Jack and Blanny Wheeler (Trenton and Allison) visit to play cards, Jack confides in Billy that he tells his wife that he is going to the Mystic Shrine whenever he needs an explanation for his absence. Jack and Laura leave separately, and Billy and Blanny discuss their mutual suspicions and get drunk. Jack, Laura, and Philip return to the apartment and Billy and Blanny are wrongly accused of being unfaithful. Laura storms out. Two days later, after having movers go to get the furniture, she returns to the apartment after becoming jealous, and discovers Blanny under Billy's bed. However, the maid (Conley) explains that this is all innocent and that Blanny was there looking for Jack. Jack overhears, and explains to Blanny that "Mystic Shrine" was his cover for going out to play poker. They reconcile. Laura, deciding to give up the promiscuous Philip, is also reconciled with Billy.

As described in a film magazine, A. J. Raffles (Barrymore), a highly educated crook with entree to the best social circles, steals for the love of it and the thrill of the chase, enjoying outwitting the police and amateur detectives. An international swindler who has possession of a priceless ruby takes passage on a steamship and Raffles does likewise. Miles from land, Raffles determines that the swindler has hidden the gem in a cavity in his shoe. After getting the ruby, Raffles empties a cartridge from his revolver and substitutes the ruby in its place. There is an outcry over the theft, and on searching Raffles a ship's officer takes the gun and removes all of the cartridges. Raffles grabs the cartridges and places them in his mouth and then jumps overboard, swimming to land. During his escape he was seen by Mrs. Vidal (Mayo), an English society woman. Raffles reappears in London, mixing with the upper class, where he is recognized by Mrs. Vidal. She falls in love with him, and attempts to force him to love her by threatening to tell of his past theft. Raffles, who is in love with Gwendolyn (Adams), defies her. The famous jewels of Lady Melrose (Brundage) disappear while Raffles is a guest of the house. Mrs. Vidal immediately suspects that Raffles is the thief and again threatens to expose him, but he laughs at her. Captain Bedford (Perry), an amateur detective, declares that he will find the thief responsible for the Melrose robbery and even makes a bet with Raffles that the thief will be arrested. Bedford is sure that Raffles is the thief. Raffles then uses some ingenious methods to get the Melrose jewelry out of his possession, but still have them at his disposal when needed. Finally, but not until after he looses the bet, Bedford proves that Raffles is the thief and Raffles shows that he took them only to prevent a professional thief from stealing them.

A group of reformers, led by Mrs. Bowers, moves to have the red light district closed and force the girls out. District Attorney Osborne, believes that it will turn out poorly for the town and tries to persuade the reforms that it would be like scattering smallpox. He fails to persuade them and the law is passed. The film focuses on one of the prostitutes, Hattie Fenshaw, who is forced out from her place of vice. According to H. D. Fretz's review, Fenshaw is determined to let those at a prominent hotel know that "women such as she had better be left alone", but is quickly recognized and evicted. At the hotel, Fenshaw makes an acquaintance of Bryant Harding who decides to keep her as his mistress and pays Fenshaw's rent in an apartment next door to one of the reformers, Mrs. Osborne. Fenshaw also charms Dudley Carleton, who breaks off his engagement to Betty Hamlin, the daughter of Harding, who uses her divorced mother's maiden name. Hamlin and Fenshaw meet through an introduction with Mrs. Bowers, and Hamlin, unaware of Fenshaw's character is telephoned by Fenshaw to come and sew for her to earn some money. Hal Harding, a college student with a desire to see the city, is introduced to Fenshaw during his father's absence. The cast assembles at Fenshaw's apartment when Hamlin arrives and interrupts Fenshaw's party with her ex-fiance and her brother, Hal. She is then introduced to her brother under and assumed name and is in the apartment when Bryant Harding returns. A fight breaks out and Harding nearly kills Carleton and knocks Fenshaw unconscious and shoots at his daughter, but misses. Alerted by the shot, the District Attorney, Mrs. Bowers and her reformer friends arrive and learn of Hattie Fenshaw's vice. Shorey's film review concludes with the presumption that Fenshaw returns to a place of "legalized vice" with Mrs. Bowers' permission.
